As the days grow shorter and the temperature begins its slow descent in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, the black bears are quietly getting ready. These magnificent creatures are not merely waiting for winter to arrive. They are actively preparing, building fat stores, choosing safe dens, and adjusting their behaviors in ways that show not just intelligence, but also resilience and adaptation.

From mid-August through autumn, many black bears enter a state called hyperphagia. They eat almost nonstop, foraging for high-calorie foods like acorns, berries, insects, and vegetation that can sustain them for months. During this time, some bears can increase their fat reserves by as much as 35 percent. This period of intense feeding is not simply gluttony; it is a survival strategy. In eating more now, the bears invest in the months ahead when food will be scarce and their energy needs must shift.

Observing Black Bears Responsibly

It was an ordinary day in Arnold, California, when an extraordinary encounter unfolded outside my home. Living in a place where wildlife roams freely is a privilege, and I had taken to documenting it with a network of cameras installed around the house. That day, the cameras alerted me to the presence of a black bear directly under my deck. Neither frightened nor cautious—just excited—I rushed outside, leaning over the railing to get a closer look.

The bear, a magnificent figure, stood out in stark contrast against the earthy tones of the landscape. I found myself staring directly into its eyes, captivated by their depth and seemingly intelligent gleam. My immediate thought was how special and rare this moment was, a literal “once in a lifetime” encounter.

But the bear didn’t stay still for long. It sauntered calmly toward a nearby pine tree and, to my surprise, stood up on its hind legs. It pressed its back against the bark and began to rub up and down as if scratching an itch. This, I assumed at the time, was the bear’s way of showing that it was comfortable. Emboldened, I did something foolish—I waved at the bear and called out, “Hi, Honey!” I genuinely believed my actions conveyed friendliness, but in hindsight, I understand how misguided and naïve I was.

However, I recently listened to a podcast featuring an Animal behaviorist discussing black bear behavior, and what I did, even though it was unintentional, was not conveying friendliness to this bear. Because I now regret my actions entirely, having become more informed. I wanted to share with you once again what I did and what I should’ve done.

Learning to Respect Wildlife

What felt magical to me likely felt stressful to the bear. By leaning over my deck and making direct eye contact, I inadvertently behaved in ways that could have been perceived as threatening. The bear’s behavior—its movement to the tree and the rubbing—may have been its way of asserting confidence or masking unease.

Looking back on that moment, I’ve had to confront my misconceptions. Observing a wild animal isn’t about creating an intimate connection or seeking acknowledgment. It’s about respecting boundaries—something I failed to do that day. Encounters like that are rare gifts, but they come with responsibility, a lesson I carry with me every time I see wildlife now.

No excited gestures or calls can replace this need for space. If you’re looking for a closer view, binoculars or a spotting scope are your best tools.

2. Use Technology to Your Advantage

My house cameras allowed me to know the bear was nearby before I even saw it. If you live in bear country, having equipment like motion-activated cameras provides a helpful heads-up while ensuring you don’t accidentally come too close.

3. Avoid Direct Eye Contact

The moment I made direct eye contact with the bear, I unintentionally crossed a line. To us, eye contact might feel like a sign of connection, but in the animal kingdom, it often signals aggression or dominance. When observing bears, keep your movements slow and steady, and avoid staring directly into their eyes.

4. Learn to Read Bear Behavior

Understanding how to recognize bear behavior can help you determine if they’re stressed or comfortable with your presence. For example, a bear standing on its hind legs is likely trying to get a better view of its surroundings—not preparing to attack. On the other hand, if a bear is huffing, snapping its jaws, or pacing, it’s time to back away. These are signs of agitation you shouldn’t ignore.

5. Never Feed or Approach Bears

It’s tempting to want to connect with animals by offering food, but feeding wildlife is one of the most harmful things you can do. Bears that associate humans with food lose their natural foraging instincts and often become problem bears, putting both themselves and humans at greater risk.

6. Secure Your Space and Belongings

If you live in bear territory, as I did, ensuring they can’t access food around your home is critical. This means securing garbage, storing bird feeders during bear-active seasons, and locking up anything that smells edible, from pet food to barbecue grills.

Should a bear come close, don’t panic. Running or yelling will only escalate tension. Instead, speak in a calm tone and retreat slowly, ensuring you provide the bear with a clear escape route.

That day on my deck in Arnold, what I initially felt was a deeply personal connection with a wild black bear. But with time and education, I’ve come to realize that what matters most in any wildlife encounter isn’t the connection you feel—it’s the care and respect you show.

If you are a dog lover, you’ve likely been captivated by the Internet-famous Dire wolf pups Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi, as I have. These majestic creatures, cloned by Colossal Biosciences, are not the loyal, waggy-tailed companions we’re used to. Their unique characteristics, from size to temperament, make them a fascinating subject of study, distinct from the domestic dogs we know and love. The dire wolf, a species that went extinct around 10,000 years ago, has been brought back to life through the wonders of modern science, offering us a glimpse into the past and a deeper understanding of evolutionary biology and genetics.

If you’ve spent time with puppies, you know the joy that comes with their natural willingness to bond, train, and love you unconditionally. After centuries of selective breeding, domestic dogs have been shaped to be people pleasers. This trait helps them integrate seamlessly into human families, whether they’re snoozing on your lap or learning new tricks.

Unlike domestic dogs, the Dire wolf pups, despite their adorable appearance, exhibit the untamed instincts of their wild ancestors. They are not wired for cuddles or ball fetching. Their brains are instinctively geared towards hunting and pack dynamics, a stark contrast to the people-pleasing nature of domestic dogs.

While domestic dog pups rely on humans for food and guidance, these Dire wolf pups will learn to hunt large animals and fight for their place in the pack’s hierarchy. This wild, independent streak makes them fascinating but far less approachable than your typical tail-wagging golden retriever.

3. Social Structure

Dogs form special bonds with us. They recognize us as part of their pack, and in return, we offer them plenty of love, treats, and a safe home. Domestic dogs have evolved to thrive in a human-centric world, seeing their humans not as threats but as family members.

Dire wolves lived and thrived in a completely different social structure than domestic dogs. They were pack animals that depended on a network of wolves to hunt and survive together. Their relationships were strictly hierarchical, based on dominance and submission within the group. This unique social structure adds a layer of complexity to their pack dynamics, setting them apart from the human-centric nature of domestic dogs and making them a fascinating subject of study.

Introducing a human into that dynamic? That’s a challenge. Domestic dogs evolved into playful companions, but Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi are expected to stay wild and independent. For them, family means their wolf pack, not a human cuddling up with Netflix after a long day.

4. Genetic Divergence

Despite sharing a common ancestor, dire wolves and domestic dogs took separate evolutionary routes over 5.7 million years ago. Recent genetic studies have confirmed that dire wolves are a distinct species, unrelated to our beloved Labrador retrievers, German shepherds, or poodles.

Domestic dogs, specifically, have been shaped by tens of thousands of years of living and evolving alongside humans. Breeding has refined their features, behaviors, and genes to complement human lifestyles. Dire wolves, however, followed a path dictated entirely by the ruthless survival pressures in prehistoric times. The genetic divergence between dire wolves and domestic dogs highlights the species’ adaptability over time and underscores the profound influence of human interaction on the evolution of domestic dogs.

We’re peering into the past when we look at Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi. These are not “dogs” but living reminders of a species that walked the Earth when saber-toothed cats and giant ground sloths roamed.

What Does This Mean for Us Dog Lovers?

While the dire wolf pups are undoubtedly impressive, they remind us of something special about domestic dogs. Over millennia, dogs have gone from wild creatures to our best friends, partners, and protectors. Their willingness to adapt to us and become part of our world is nothing short of incredible.

I can’t help but feel grateful for the wagging tails that greet me, the goofy antics that make me laugh, and their loyalty that always warms my heart. Dire wolves may be a fascinating window into the past, but domestic dogs are the everyday joy that fills our lives.

A Year in the Life of Squirrels: The Four Seasons of Mischief and Industriousness

This blog is dedicated to my follower, Millie. She requested more information on squirrels, and like me, she is a fellow nature lover.

If there’s one creature that never fails to bring a smile to my face during a walk through the park or a glance out the kitchen window, it’s the squirrel. These little rascals are endlessly entertaining, whether the bold and cheeky gray squirrel, the fiery and energetic red squirrel, or the seemingly magical flying squirrel gliding between trees.

What keeps squirrels so busy throughout the year? Let’s look at how our bushy-tailed friends spend their days in each season.

This series of up-close and personal photos of the same squirrel were taken on our deck in Arnold, CA.

Spring

Spring marks the start of bustling activity for squirrels as the world returns to life. After a long winter of reduced activity, they bounce through the trees with renewed energy. It’s also mating season, so you might notice them chasing each other, leaping from branch to branch in a frenzied game of tag. It’s like watching a tiny soap opera play out in the trees.

Mother squirrels build nests out of twigs, leaves, and moss to raise their young during this time. If you’re lucky enough, you might spot some baby squirrels peeking out of their cozy nests. The young ones are adorable with their tiny tails and wobbly movements.

Food is again abundant in spring, and squirrels feast on newly sprouted buds, tender flowers, and nuts they stashed away the previous fall. It’s their time to replenish and prepare for the adventures of summer.

Summer

Ah, summer. Long, sunny days mean there’s plenty of time for squirrels to scurry around and explore their little territories. They’re master multitaskers during this season. On the one hand, they’re still foraging and caching food (because a squirrel can never have too much food hidden away). On the other hand, they’re busy repairing their nests and caring for young squirrels, learning the ropes of squirrel life.

Summer is also when squirrels’ playful (and occasionally mischievous) personalities fully shine. They’re hilariously clever and shameless, whether stealing a bird’s seed or sneakily raiding a backyard garden for a tomato. Their playful antics, like the feisty red squirrel chasing away a much larger gray squirrel, never fail to entertain and amuse.

And while flying squirrels are more complicated to spot, they are especially active on warm summer nights. Their silent glides from tree to tree are like something out of a nature documentary!

Autumn

If there’s one word to sum up squirrels in autumn, it’s “BUSY.” This is their most industrious season as they prepare for the long, cold winter. Watch closely; they frantically gather nuts, acorns, and seeds. Their tiny paws move so quickly! Sometimes, they bury their treasures right in your yard, and yes, they almost always forget some of their hiding spots (hello, accidental tree planting). Their work ethic is truly impressive.

Squirrels also plump up during autumn, feasting on as much food as possible. Their usually trim little frames look extra round and fluffy by the time the first frosts arrive. Trust me, it only makes them look cuter.

In addition to gathering and eating, squirrels fortify their nests, lining them with warmer, thicker materials. Squirrels are experienced survivalists, and you can see how much effort they put into preparing for the months ahead. Their resourcefulness and intelligence in adapting to changing seasons are truly impressive.

Winter

Winter slows things down for squirrels but doesn’t completely stop them. While they’re not true hibernators, they cut back on activity and rely on their hidden food caches. On milder winter days, you might see them venture out to dig up a buried acorn or raid a bird feeder. (Sometimes, I swear birds and squirrels have an unspoken rivalry regarding feeders!)

When temperatures drop, squirrels huddle together in their nests to conserve warmth. It’s a surprisingly sweet image: a group of furry friends snuggled up to keep each other cozy.

Flying squirrels thrive in the dark winter months, gliding through snow-dusted woods under the night sky. While they’re less rambunctious than their daytime cousins, their elegance and grace are mesmerizing.

And while winter can be brutal, squirrels rarely lose their cheeky charm. They always seem to find a way to survive with grit, resourcefulness, and a hint of mischief. Their resilience in harsh conditions is truly inspiring, a testament to their adaptability and survival skills.

Why We Love Squirrels

Squirrels are endlessly fascinating little creatures. They are hardworking yet playful, resourceful yet unapologetically mischievous. Whether darting through spring branches, stealing summer snacks, frantically burying autumn treasures, or braving the challenges of winter, they bring life and joy to every season.

From Gray Foxes to Skunks: The Incredible Variety of Animals Visiting My Backyard

There’s something truly enchanting about stepping into your backyard and realizing it’s not just yours. It’s a vibrant ecosystem, teeming with life—even when you’re not looking. I stumbled upon this revelation when I set up the trail cameras from Arnold in my backyard in Tracy, CA. What began as a simple curiosity became a gateway to a hidden world I never knew existed. The surprises have been ceaseless, from the graceful gray foxes and the shy skunks to the unexpected nocturnal visitors. The sheer variety of animals that grace my backyard never fails to surprise and delight me.

Trail cameras have entirely transformed how I connect with nature right outside my door. They have given me incredible photos and videos and taught me so much about the animals I share my space with. Every nature lover, backyard observer, and curious soul should try them. The educational aspect of using trail cameras is genuinely enriching, providing insights into the lives and behaviors of the creatures that visit our backyards.

Unexpected Wildlife Wonders

The first time I set up my trail cameras, I expected to see a stray cat or squirrel stealing food from my garden. I didn’t expect beautiful gray foxes casually playing at dawn. Then, a few days later, I caught sight of a shy skunk waddling through. I even spotted multiple chunky raccoons passing through my yard, their cute forms under the moonlight.

These candid moments felt like gifts. I truly missed the big predators in Arnold. My field cameras in Arnold captured magnificent photos of black bears, mountain lions, black-tailed deer, bobcats, raccoons, squirrels, and gray foxes. So, the wildlife I photograph in my backyard in Tracy is so welcome!

Discovering Patterns in Backyard Behavior

Beyond the magic of unexpected visitors, my trail camera gave me something just as valuable: insights into the habits and routines of these animals. For example, I started noticing specific times that particular creatures liked to visit. The gray foxes seemed to arrive at the same hour every morning, and the skunk was a regular around midnight.

I also observed fascinating behaviors. For instance, I was amazed at how the raccoons worked as a team to scavenge in my yard. These patterns helped me better understand and appreciate their lives. They showed me that my backyard wasn’t just a random stop for them but a part of their ecosystem.

The Joy of Candid Moments with My Pets

My trail camera isn’t just for the wild animals in my yard. It’s also given me heartwarming glimpses of Teddy and Bear, my two dogs, playing with Summer, my granddog. Thanks to my trail cameras, I can now preserve these candid episodes, which I might have missed otherwise.

It’s also been a great way to monitor their safety. I’ve spotted moments when a raccoon wandered too close to my dogs’ play area, and knowing about it helped me make adjustments to keep everyone safe. The mix of pets and wild animals reminds us how interconnected we are, and the trail camera plays a crucial role in ensuring this harmony. The peace of mind that comes from monitoring and protecting our pets is invaluable, and the trail camera facilitates this responsibility.

Night Camera Diaries

Perhaps the most exciting revelations come after dark. Nighttime is when the backyard truly comes alive. Whenever I check the trail camera in the morning, I’m greeted with clips of possums navigating the fences, owls perched silently in the trees, and gray foxes under the stars.

The footage feels almost otherworldly, especially seeing animals I’d never expected to encounter. These nocturnal visitors feel like characters from a nighttime fairy tale, and I can’t believe they’re right here, just outside my door.

Picture this: it’s February 2nd, and the world comes to a delightful standstill, not for a solemn occasion, but to witness a groundhog’s whimsical weather forecast. Yes, a groundhog! It may seem whimsical, but this tradition is heartwarming, grounding (pun intended), and filled with infectious laughter and joy. We set aside our forecasts, radars, and science if only for a moment, to rely on the humble groundhog as our weather oracle, and it’s a moment brimming with laughter and joy.

Groundhog Day is one of those rare occasions where history, nature, and community unite in the quirkiest way possible. So grab a warm drink, pull up a comfy chair, and join me as we dig into (again, pun intended) this delightful holiday and its curious mix of ancient lore, cultural significance, and modern charm.

From Candlemas Day to Groundhog Day

The origins of Groundhog Day stretch back to ancient European traditions tied to Candlemas Day. On February 2nd, Candlemas marked the midpoint between the winter solstice and spring equinox. The day carried a superstitious belief that clear weather was a bad omen for winter’s end. It led to the old rhyme, “If Candlemas Day be fair and bright, winter will have another flight.”

When German immigrants carried this practice to Pennsylvania, they added a peculiar twist—instead of relying on the skies, they turned to a beloved animal, the groundhog. Folklore had long associated animals with seasonal changes, and the furry groundhog, known for its hibernation patterns and burrow life, became a natural choice.

The first recorded mention of Groundhog Day in North America dates back to the 1840s. Still, things indeed took off in the 1880s with the first official Groundhog Day celebration at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. And the star of the show? In my quest to find the perfect topics to write about each week, I embark on a deep dive into the vast world of my interests. Armed with a steaming cup of coffee and an eager mind, I began scouring reputable news sites for emerging trends and innovations. Simultaneously, I immersed myself in online communities of environmental activists, where passionate debates and current issues unfolded before my eyes. First and foremost, my love for dogs nudges me to fellow dog lovers, uncovering shared challenges and heartwarming tales. I found inspiration from Born Free USA’s website as the puzzle pieces came together. This week, October 20-26, is National Wolf Awareness Week. So I am happy to share with you what I have learned about National Wolf Awareness Week.

This week, October 20-26, National Wolf Awareness Week is celebrated—a crucial opportunity to reflect on the majestic creatures that have roamed our landscapes for centuries. Yet, for too long, wolves have been misunderstood and mistreated, leading to dire consequences for their populations. Today, let’s uncover the truth about wolves and urgently advocate for their protection together.

The History of Wolves in the United States

Imagine a time when wolves roamed freely across the United States, their howls echoing through the forests. Sadly, this idyllic vision was shattered in the early 1900s when widespread misinformation painted wolves as dangerous predators. This led to their mass persecution and near extinction.

Two prominent species, the gray wolf and the red wolf, call the U.S. home. The red wolf is now the rarest large carnivore in the country, teetering on the brink of extinction. By the 1970s, the situation was so dire that wolves were designated the most endangered species in the U.S., thanks to the 1973 Endangered Species Act (ESA). This landmark legislation gave them much-needed legal protection, offering a lifeline to these incredible animals.

Yet, the battle for wolf conservation has been a rollercoaster. In 2011, congressional action removed protections for gray wolves in Idaho and Montana, setting a precedent for legislative interference in wildlife conservation. Fast-forward to 2019, the Trump administration stripped gray wolves of federal protection nationwide, exposing them to renewed threats, including unregulated hunting.

Despite a 2022 federal ruling overturning this decision, wolves in the Northern Rocky Mountain states remain vulnerable. Wolves as Keystone Species

Wolves are not just another species but keystone species crucial in maintaining ecological balance. By regulating herbivore populations like deer and elk, they prevent overgrazing, which allows vegetation to flourish and supports diverse ecosystems.

Yellowstone National Park is a prime example of what happens when wolves disappear. When hunting nearly eradicated wolves in the early 1900s, the ecosystem suffered. Elk populations exploded, leading to overgrazing and adverse effects on plants, songbirds, beavers, and even fish. This underscores the essential role wolves play in their ecosystems.

The Feasibility of Silver Foxes Becoming Domesticated

As you know, I’ve written a lot about dog cognition and their domestication. Recently, because of the gray foxes I observe in my backyard almost daily, I have thought about a study I became aware of several years ago. A scientist in Russia was explicitly interested in the same subject and working on the feasibility of domesticating silver foxes. Silver foxes differ from gray foxes, but I wondered how that study had proceeded and whether there were any conclusions. While researching Google, I discovered it had continued for 59 years.

I can’t help but be captivated by the wild elegance of the one or more gray foxes in my backyard. The concept of domesticated foxes isn’t just a fantasy; it’s a burgeoning reality in certain regions. But what does it truly mean for a fox to be domesticated, and is it a potential we can embrace?

The Journey from Wild to Domesticated

Foxes share more traits with dogs than one might initially think. This is a testament to the fascinating behavioral flexibility within the canid family, as Dr. Alexandra Horowitz, author of “Inside of a Dog,” observes. Indeed, domesticated foxes exist in parts of the world, and their behaviors show an uncanny resemblance to our canine companions. These creatures are beautiful and intriguing in their potential for domestication.

Yet, the question remains—how do foxes transition from wild creatures to potentially domesticated pets? It’s a complex dance of genetics, environment, and behavioral shifts. Urban foxes, for instance, are believed to be in the early stages of self-domestication. This means they adapt to urban environments and show behaviors more tolerant of human presence. Dr. Chris Newman, a wildlife biologist, notes, “The adaptation of urban foxes suggests a significant behavioral shift, which could be an early stage of self-domestication.”

The Science Behind Domestication

Domestication is not as simple as taming a wild animal; it involves genetic evolution driven by selective breeding over generations. Dr. Elinor Karlsson of the Broad Institute emphasizes, “Understanding the genetic underpinnings of domestication in foxes offers insights into the complex interplay of genetics and behavior.” This interplay determines how or if a species can be domesticated.

For the last 59 years, a team of Russian geneticists led by Lyudmila Trut, the famed Russian silver fox experiments, where selective breeding for friendliness was explored. In these experiments, researchers selectively bred foxes for their friendliness toward humans, leading to significant changes in their behavior and appearance over generations. While these efforts have shown promise, they also reveal the challenges ahead. Dr. Clive Wynne, a dog and wolf behavior expert, states, “Selective breeding for friendliness in foxes is a fascinating experiment but comes with significant welfare and ethical considerations.”

Ethical Considerations and Challenges

While the potential for domestication is exciting, it also comes with significant responsibility. The welfare of the animals must be our top priority, ensuring their physical and psychological well-being. We must be mindful of ethical breeding practices to prevent unnecessary suffering and ensure the long-term health of domesticated foxes.

Additionally, pet owners must provide appropriate care and living conditions, respecting the species’ natural behaviors and needs.

Furthermore, we must consider the potential impact on wild fox populations. Domestication could introduce diseases, create resource competition, or lead to genetic dilution. It’s crucial to balance our desire for domestication and the need for wildlife conservation, ensuring we protect and preserve wild fox populations and their habitats.

As we delve into the potential of fox domestication, it’s important to recognize the promising benefits it could bring. With urban foxes already showing signs of self-domestication, this endeavor could lead to a closer, more harmonious relationship between humans and foxes. The potential benefits could include:

Reduced fear of humans in wild foxes.
Better understanding of fox behavior.
Potentially even conservation benefits.

However, we must proceed cautiously, mindful of the ethical implications and challenges.

Foxes are a vibrant thread in the grand tapestry of life, their wild spirit captivating and inspiring.
