Whose Tracks Are These? A Little Mystery on My Morning Walk

One of the things I enjoy most about my morning walks isn’t just the exercise. It’s the opportunity to notice the little things that I might have hurried past previously.

I’ve begun paying closer attention to something I had often overlooked before: animal tracks.

At first, I saw a few paw prints on the sidewalk. Then I began wondering, “Who walked here before I did?”

Was it someone’s dog out for an early morning stroll? A neighborhood cat? A raccoon returning home after a night of exploring? Could it even have been a bobcat?

Suddenly, my morning walk became a mystery waiting to be solved.

This morning, a neighbor had watered their lawn overnight. The water flowed across the sidewalk, creating a patch of damp pavement. An animal wandered through the mud and then continued along the sidewalk, leaving behind a beautiful trail of crisp little footprints. It felt as though nature had left me a message.

I stopped to take a photograph.

Can you help me identify these tracks? I am learning to look for clues. How many toes are visible? Are there claw marks? Is the paw round like a cat’s or does it have long, finger-like toes like a raccoon? Even the distance between the tracks can provide hints about how the animal moves. Every photograph becomes a small lesson in wildlife observation.

I’m now planning to carry a small ruler or tape measure on my walks so I can photograph tracks alongside a scale for comparison. It may sound a little silly, but I find myself looking forward to the next mystery.

What I love most is that these tracks remind me that we share our neighborhoods with many unseen visitors. While most of us are sleeping, raccoons, foxes, opossums, cats, and countless other creatures are quietly going about their lives. By sunrise, they may be gone, but their footprints remain, telling a story for anyone willing to notice.

After recently helping rescue baby opossums following the tragic loss of their mother, I find myself even more aware of the wildlife around me. Every track is a reminder that these animals are simply trying to survive alongside us.

Perhaps you’ve noticed tracks on your own driveway, sidewalk, or favorite walking trail.

The next time you do, don’t just step over them. Pause for a moment. Take a closer look. Ask yourself, “Who passed this way before me?”

You might discover that your daily walk has become a treasure hunt, one that encourages curiosity, observation, and a deeper appreciation for the remarkable creatures that share our world.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures don’t require traveling to distant places. Sometimes, they begin with a single footprint on the sidewalk or in our streets.
