Antiques

In a previous blog, I mentioned that I am the keeper of our family history. My house is a museum. I have treasured pieces of art and furniture from my family and my husband’s family. Are they valuable? Probably not, but the personal value is irreplaceable. One note of interest, however, speaks to the quality of the antique furniture; my grandmother’s antique furniture received the full force of the water when in September of 2019, the fire prevention sprinkler system experienced a catastrophic failure damaging 75% of our home. My grandmother’s furniture, which is now well over 100 years old, needed to be dried off, but each piece survived.

Even if you don’t have family antiques that once belonged to your great-grandparents or are part of your family history, have you ever considered collecting antiques? If not, you might be surprised to learn that it can be an enriching hobby. Not only do you have the opportunity to own and appreciate beautiful items from the past, but you also gain a deeper understanding of history. And the best part? Some antiques are valuable collectibles that have the potential to increase in value over time.

Collecting antiques is like stepping into a time machine and being transported to another era. With each piece, you acquire a beautiful object and a part of history and culture. Antiques are more than just decorative items; they have their own stories and personalities to share. As a collector, you become a caretaker of valuable pieces of our cultural heritage, and you’re able to preserve a part of family history that might otherwise be lost. The sense of value and appreciation for the past that comes with collecting antiques is unparalleled. By gathering these precious pieces together, you create a narrative for yourself about them and share in the more extensive record of our history. Antiques are not just collectibles; they reflect who we are and where we came from.

Antiques are more than just stunning works of art—they’re a glimpse into our history and, as in my case, often hold familial significance. For many collectors, the sentimental value of their antique collection is worth more than any monetary gain. However, investing in genuine antiques can also prove financially lucrative over time. With comprehensive research, a keen eye, and a bit of luck, your collection could soar in value over the years.

Collecting antiques can be a great way to add a unique, memorable style to your home while gaining a deeper understanding of different cultures and stories that shape history. Delightful finds abound in antique stores, and the joy of the hunt is truly something special. Who knows—maybe you’ll uncover hidden gems as you learn more about these vintage pieces! Whether adding life and personality to your home décor or simply broadening your knowledge base of cultural artifacts, collecting antiques offers lasting value for any collector.
