August is National Dog Month

August holds a special place in my heart. It’s not because of the warm summer breezes or weekend barbecues, though those are lovely. It’s because of National Dog Month, a time to celebrate the unconditional love, loyalty, and joy that our dogs bring into our lives. For me, it’s a celebration of my three golden retrievers, Teddy, Bear, and Summer. They aren’t just pets. They are family. They’re my furry children. And if you’re reading this, chances are you feel the same way about your four-legged babies.
Where Did National Dog Month Begin?
National Dog Month is a relatively new celebration, started in 2020 by Milk-Bone, the beloved dog treat company. They created this month-long dedication to dogs as a way to honor not only the pups in our lives but also the human-dog relationship that has endured over time. Milk-Bone has been a trusted name in dog care for over a century, so it makes sense that they would lead this effort.

They chose August because, honestly, who doesn’t want an excuse to spoil their dog during the relaxing, sunny days of late summer? Plus, it gives us a fun, joyful reason to focus on the happiness that dogs bring as we begin winding down from the dog days of summer (pardon the pun). Now, every August, dog lovers nationwide come together to celebrate their furry friends in big and small ways.

Why National Dog Month Matters More Than Ever
The bond between humans and dogs is nothing new, but lately, our dogs have become more critical to our mental and emotional well-being than ever before. After everything the world has gone through in the past few years, many people have found steadiness, comfort, and even happiness in the company of their pets. I know this has been true for me. Whether it’s the quiet mornings when Teddy curls up at my side, the goofy antics of Bear that send me into fits of laughter, or the gentle way Summer looks at me when she comes over for a playdate, my dogs remind me of life’s simplest, purest joys.

Dogs aren’t just pets, they’re companions, caretakers, cheerleaders, and sometimes even therapists. Research has shown that owning a dog can help lower stress, reduce anxiety, and improve overall well-being. During quarantine, dogs offered many of us a sense of routine, reasons to get outside, and non-judgmental emotional support on even the hardest days. National Dog Month is an excellent time to recognize and celebrate all of that.

Celebrating Our Furry Children
If you’re a dog parent like me, you already know that dogs are much more than animals; they’re family. Teddy, Bear, and Summer are my constant companions. They aren’t just “the dogs”; they’re my kids with fur.

Bear has this hilarious habit of stealing socks, especially when I’m folding laundry. He’ll trot into the other room proudly, his tail wagging wildly, as if he’s just discovered buried treasure. Then there’s Summer, with her sweet, thoughtful eyes that seem to say, “I’ve got you, no matter what.” And of course, Teddy, my “soul dog,” always seems to know when I need a little extra love.

For dog parents, every day is filled with moments of joy thanks to the wagging tails, belly flops, rainy-day cuddles, and late-night paw taps on the bed that remind us we’re never alone. August feels like the perfect time to lean into those moments and create even more of them.
Ideas for Celebrating National Dog Month
Not sure how to celebrate? Here are some ideas to show your pup just how much they mean to you:
  • Plan a Doggie Adventure: Take your dog to a new hiking trail, a dog-friendly beach, or a nearby park to explore.
  • Make Homemade Dog Treats: There’s something so special about whipping up something healthy and delicious for your furry friend. (Teddy, Bear, and Summer adore anything with peanut butter.)
  • Schedule a Mini Photoshoot: Capture the essence of your dog’s personality with some fun, candid snapshots. Bonus points if you can get your dog to wear a cute bandana or costume.
  • Host a Dog Party: Invite your dog-loving friends and their pups over for a backyard celebration with treats, toys, and lots of tail-wagging fun.
  • Spoil Them with Love: Of course, love needs no special occasion, but August is a great excuse to give extra belly rubs, longer walks, or an extra snuggle session at bedtime.
A Time to Reflect on Gratitude
At its heart, National Dog Month is about gratitude. It’s about giving thanks for the wagging tails that greet us at the door, the furry heads resting on our knees, and the companionship that can make even the most challenging times feel just a little bit lighter. For me, Teddy, Bear, and Summer are my everything. They remind me daily to find joy in small things and to love without limits.

This August, I encourage you to take a moment to appreciate your own furry family. Celebrate them with treats or adventures, or sit with them and soak up the quiet, beautiful bond you share. No matter how you celebrate National Dog Month, one thing is sure: life is better with dogs. Puppies or senior dogs, purebred or rescue, they all deserve to be celebrated for the unconditional love they so eagerly give.

Happy National Dog Month! Hug your furry child a little tighter today, you know they’d do it for you, too.
