Bear and the Case of the Vanishing Sock

It began, as all great mysteries do, on an ordinary morning. The sun had barely stretched across the living room when I noticed something suspicious: one lonely sock sitting on the laundry basket, its partner nowhere to be found. 

Bear, of course, was already on the scene. His tail wagged with professional confidence as he sniffed the evidence. Teddy observed from his post on the couch, looking very much like a senior detective supervising the rookie.

“Another sock missing,” I said aloud. “That makes three this week.”

Bear tilted his head. He seemed to be considering the facts, or possibly the taste of lint. Either way, I could see his detective mind at work.

The search began in the usual places: under the bed, behind the couch, and inside the laundry basket (twice, to be thorough). No luck. Then, like any good investigator, Bear followed his nose straight to the backyard.

There, half-buried beneath his favorite toy and one slightly suspicious leaf pile, was the missing sock. Evidence recovered. Case closed.

Or so I thought.

Because that afternoon, when I returned to fold laundry, another sock had disappeared. Same drawer. Same mystery. Same gleam in Bear’s eyes when I asked who might be responsible.

Teddy sighed, the kind of deep sigh only an older, wiser dog can produce. It said, quite clearly, “You’ll never prove it.”

And maybe he’s right. Maybe some mysteries are meant to stay unsolved.

Still, Bear enjoys keeping us on our feet, or perhaps, in this case, just one of them.
