We all have those days, don’t we? The ones where even the simplest tasks feel like climbing a mountain, and your creativity seems to have gone on an extended vacation. First, know this: you’re not alone. These low-energy, low-motivation days are not a sign of weakness but a regular part of the creative process. The good news? They’re also temporary and completely normal.
If you’ve been searching for a way to reignite your inspiration and get back on track, you’re in the right place. Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite ways to boost motivation, rekindle creativity, and cultivate a mindset that strikes a balance between productivity and self-care.
Recognize That It’s Okay to Hit the Pause Button
Before anything else, remind yourself that it’s perfectly okay to have off days. There’s a societal pressure to always be ‘on.’ Still, the reality is that even the most successful and creative individuals encounter obstacles. I’ve had my fair share of these moments, and I can tell you, they’re natural and, in some cases, your body or mind’s way of saying, ‘Hey, it’s time to slow down for a bit.’
Start by giving yourself grace. Rather than fighting those feelings of sluggishness, acknowledge them. Instead of labeling the day as ‘unproductive,’ see it as an opportunity to reset and recalibrate. Embrace these off days as an opportunity to take a breather and return stronger.
Create a Space That Sparks Joy
Your environment plays a significant role in how motivated and creative you feel. Is your workspace cluttered or uninspiring? That could be adding to your creative roadblock. Here’s how you can make a change:
- Declutter. A clear space can lead to a clear mind, so take a few minutes to tidy up.
- Add inspiration. Surround yourself with objects that energize you, whether it’s vibrant art, a vision board, or your favorite motivational quote.
- Pay attention to light and sound. Natural light and calming sounds (or an uplifting playlist) can shift your mood and kickstart your motivation.
I am fortunate to have bay windows at the front of my office, and I benefit from the natural light and the view of the trees. Pausing to look out at nature is a simple change, but it shifts the whole vibe of my workspace.
Fuel Your Body to Fuel Your Mind
It’s hard to feel inspired when you’re running on empty. Low energy can often stem from neglecting the basics, such as hydration, proper nutrition, and regular physical activity.
- Drink water. It may sound simple, but dehydration can leave you feeling foggy and fatigued.
- Snack wisely. Reach for energy-boosting foods, like a handful of almonds or a piece of fruit, to sustain focus without the dreaded sugar crash. And when it comes to restorative activities, consider journaling, meditating, or simply getting enough rest.
- Move your body. A quick stretch, walk around the block, or dance party in your living room can shake off lethargy and get the blood (and ideas) flowing.
On particularly blah days, I swear by a quick walk outside. Even 10 minutes of fresh air works wonders for resetting my mind.
Start With One Thing
If your to-do list looks overwhelming, it’s no wonder you’re stuck in low-motivation mode. Instead of staring at the whole list, choose ONE thing. That’s it—just one. Remember, even the most significant tasks can be broken down into smaller, more manageable steps. It’s okay to start small; it’s a step in the right direction.
Whether it’s a simple task or a creative project, focus on starting small. Starting small builds momentum, and momentum has a magical way of turning into motivation.
It could be as easy as replying to a single email. Once you start, you may find yourself ready to tackle the following items on your list. If not? That’s okay, too. Celebrate the win in starting.
Make It Fun
Sometimes, what stops us is the thought of the task itself. If it feels dull or daunting, it’s no surprise that your motivation takes a nosedive. What if you could make it more enjoyable? Turning routine tasks into the ultimate challenge or game can make them more engaging and rewarding.
- Turn routine tasks into the ultimate challenge or game.
- Reward yourself when you finish. (When I tick off something challenging, I like to treat myself to iced coffee or 20 minutes of guilt-free podcast time.)
- Bring creativity into the mundane. For example, if you’re writing, try experimenting with a more playful or unconventional approach.
Pro tip
Now and then, I’ll put on my favorite upbeat playlist and simply daydream. It’s a mood booster and productivity fuel in one!
Surround Yourself With Inspiration
When I’m feeling stuck, one of the first things I do is look outward. Conversations with peers, audiobooks, podcasts, or watching a TED Talk can flood your brain with fresh ideas. There’s something about hearing others’ creative perspectives that can reignite your drive.
Being connected to a community can also be beneficial. Share your thoughts with friends or colleagues, or explore communities aligned with your passions and goals. Feeling supported and understood is a powerful motivation.
Balance Productivity With Self-Care
Finally, one of the most important steps is making room for self-care. When we’re constantly in “go” mode, we forget that recharging helps us show up better in everything we do.
It’s okay to step away and do something restorative, whether that’s journaling, meditating, or just getting enough rest. Remember, sometimes, the most significant breakthroughs happen when you’re not actively trying to make them happen.
Take the First Step
Low-motivation days don’t have to derail you. By creating an environment that inspires creativity, taking small yet meaningful actions, and prioritizing your well-being, you can regain your flow.
When I feel stuck, I remind myself that inspiration isn’t always about waiting for the “ah-ha” moment. It’s something we can actively nurture, bit by bit until it starts to blossom again.
Now it’s your turn! What strategies do you use to overcome low-energy days? Whether it’s creating an inspiring environment, taking small but meaningful actions, or prioritizing your well-being, share your tips in the comments—I’d love to hear from you, and we can learn from each other.
