National Teddy Bear Day

The teddy bear’s origin is a tale of compassion and creativity. It begins with an American president. In November 1902, President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt went on a hunting trip in Mississippi. The hunt was slow. To avoid sending the President home empty-handed, his guides cornered and tied a black bear to a willow tree for him to shoot.

Roosevelt was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He saw the trapped animal and refused to shoot. He felt killing a tied bear was unsportsmanlike. This act of compassion became national news. Clifford Berryman, a political cartoonist, drew a cartoon for The Washington Post, showing Roosevelt turning away from the frightened bear.

The cartoon inspired Morris Michtom, a Brooklyn toy store owner. He and his wife, Rose, created a stuffed bear cub. With President Roosevelt’s permission, they used his nickname and called it “Teddy’s Bear.” Michtom placed the bear in his shop window. It was a quick success. Demand soared, so Michtom founded the Ideal Toy Company. The teddy bear, as we know it, was born.

It’s a story that always brings a smile to my face. To think that this iconic toy, a symbol of childhood comfort, was born from a moment of kindness is truly special. Building on that legacy of comfort, let’s consider why teddy bears continue to mean so much to us today.
This large teddy bear sits just behind my desk in my office, keeping me company.

Why We Still Love Teddy Bears

From that first “Teddy’s Bear” to the many types in stores and my own collection, teddy bears are still popular. But why? What makes these stuffed animals so cherished, even long after childhood?

A Symbol of Comfort and Security
For many of us, a teddy bear was our first friend. It was there for us on scary nights, lonely afternoons, and tearful goodbyes. A teddy bear does not judge or argue; it just listens. Its soft fur wipes away tears. Its plush body is perfect for giving and receiving hugs when we need comfort.

A Link to Nostalgia and Simpler Times
In a fast-paced world, teddy bears remind us of the simplicity of childhood. They evoke nostalgia and transport us back to a time of imagination, play, and unconditional love. Holding one can feel like holding a piece of our history.

As a collector, each bear on my shelf has a story. I have a bear from a small antique shop that I found on a rainy day, one gifted by a friend after a hard week, and others that I inherited from family members who have passed away. They are not just toys; they hold memories. These bears represent love, connection, and history, forming a tapestry that weaves through my life.

Encouraging Empathy and Nurturing
For children, a teddy bear is often a first chance to practice empathy. They care for their bear, tuck it into bed, host tea parties, and share secrets. This play is important for emotional growth. It shows children how to care for others. It also helps them build compassion and relationships later on.

Watching Teddy and Bear, my dogs, nudge their stuffed toys reminds me of this instinct. There’s something innate about caring for something soft and helpless. Teddy bears offer a safe way to let that instinct grow.

Celebrating in Your Own Way
National Teddy Bear Day is a great reason to find simple joy in these furry friends. You do not need to be a collector to celebrate.
Here are a few simple ideas:
  • Find your old bear if you have one. Give it a hug. Remember the comfort it once brought you.
  • Tell your children or grandchildren about your first teddy bear. Sharing these stories builds connection across generations.
  • Consider donating a new teddy bear to a children’s hospital, a local shelter, or a charity. You can give a scared or uncertain child a comforting friend.
  • If you have little ones, try a teddy bear picnic. Pack snacks and enjoy a sunny afternoon with your family and favorite stuffed companions.
More Than Just a Toy
As I write, Teddy and Bear snooze at my feet. Their soft breathing is a comforting rhythm in the quiet room. They are my living, breathing teddy bears. They remind me every day of the power of love, companionship, and simple comfort, the same qualities found in the stuffed bears on my shelves.

National Teddy Bear Day began with a president’s act of compassion. The teddy bear is now a global symbol of love and security. These stuffed creatures are more than toys. They are first confidants, silent cheerleaders, and keepers of our memories. Take a moment today to honor the teddy bear in your life, past or present, and the comfort it represents.
