On a chilly March morning, with the promise of spring just around the corner, a particular kind of joy unfolds like a well-worn recipe book in kitchens across America. It’s National Oreo Cookie Day, and like so many of you, I find myself reflecting on the simple pleasures these iconic cookies have brought into our lives.
While a single day can scarcely contain the multitudes of moments we’ve shared with Oreo cookies, March 6 is set apart to honor this humble treat that has, in its own right, become a slice of Americana. It’s incredible to think about how these delightful discs of chocolate with a creamy center have been part of our lives since 1912. Sam J. Porcello, a scientist at what would become Nabisco, could hardly have imagined the legacy he was shaping when he invented the original cookie.
Isn’t it fascinating that an invention that began as the “Oreo Biscuit” in a simple tin sold for 25 cents a pound has blossomed into a phenomenon enjoyed worldwide? It’s transformed into “Oreo Sandwich,” “Oreo Creme Sandwich,” and today’s beloved “Oreo Cookie.” Yet, no matter its name, it remains endearingly simply “Oreo.”
I often wonder about the countless ways in which Oreos have witnessed the tapestry of our lives – the after-school snacks shared with friends, the late-night munchies during college cram sessions, the smiles of grandparents as they secretly pass an Oreo to a grandchild under the dinner table.
Today, I invite you to join me in commemorating the joy that Oreos have sprinkled throughout our stories. Pour yourself a glass of milk—the timeless companion to this cherished treat—and dig in. Maybe twist one open to savor the frosting first; I won’t tell.
You could surprise your loved ones with a box or take some to work, spreading the joy of Oreos in small acts that echo through the heartbeats of our communities. And, when night falls, consider topping your favorite ice cream with crumbled Oreos because on National Oreo Cookie Day, extra indulgence is more than acceptable—it’s practically mandatory!
In the shared whispers of “my favorite way to eat an Oreo is…” we bond over the narratives we’ve built. Stories of innocence, comfort, and our endless capacity for small delights. And amid these tales and the crunch of cookies, we are reminded that it’s not just about the Oreos—it’s about connection, legacy, and the sweet crumbs of life we collect along the way.
Happy National Oreo Cookie Day, everyone. May your hearts and cookie jars be full. 🍪❤️
