My purpose in starting the blog was to share humbling life experiences with you, and recently I experienced an event that was utterly unexpected and completely humbling!
Earlier this year, my husband and I purchased a model home in Tracy in a development that was sold out. Before the purchase, we walked through the model many times, and I’m sure we saw the sprinkler heads but didn’t even give them a second thought. I thought a Sprinkler System was a safety feature, and I did feel safe in the home. A new home should be up to code and not in need of any repairs or inspection, or so I thought.
After four months, we had made a lot of progress, putting things away. There were still boxes to be unpacked, but we were making progress. Things were coming together, and there was time to relax. What a concept! Ironically that’s what I decided to do on September 26 right around noon. I hadn’t even become comfortable in the chair when a massive explosion occurred. It was loud, and the house shook. At the time, I thought the heater might have exploded or an airplane crashed into the house. We lived near the Tracy airport (a General Aviation Airport). There was no smoke, but the alarm was going off. I had no idea what was going on! That’s when the water began pouring through the ceiling. There was water flowing through the light fixtures, fans, and down the walls. The room was rapidly flooding. I became fearful that the upper level was going to collapse. I grabbed the dogs and ran outside to safety. I called my husband, and he seemed to know what the problem was and immediately called the builder. A Representative arrived and asked for every available person to drop everything and come over and assist. Time was a blur, but in a short time, a large number of people were in my house moving furniture and trying to mop up the water. I was asked if I was OK because I was upset and in shock! I was so scared, and I felt helpless because I didn’t know what to do.
The explosion occurred above the master closet. The blast blew a hole in the ceiling to the roof. Water, insulation, sheetrock, etc., blasted out like shrapnel. 75% of the house experienced water damage.

Our home was unlivable. We didn’t want to leave and were ready to sleep in the backyard, but the builder insisted that we stay in a local Extended Stay Hotel. So that’s where we went. Luckily we have a family home in Arnold, California, that is also a potential retreat.
