Teaching Teddy to Read

The author of the book, Teach Your Dog to Read, Bonnie Berlin, ED.D., is not a professional dog trainer. She applied what she knew about how children learn to teach a dog. She was amazed by the cognitive capabilities of dogs. She noted that previously all dog training involved physical conditioning and now she wanted to train their minds. For three decades, she worked with dogs and continues to be amazed by their extraordinary capacity for learning.

Attempting to teach a dog to read is not a joke or a cute trick. Dogs already can do brilliant things to assist humans in many different ways, so why not reading? For instance, think of the value for guide dogs for the blind. If a guide dog were able to understand essential words such as, “exit,” then that dog could assist the blind person to the right door to exit the building. The ability to read might help us to better communicate with these amazing animals. Dogs like people are always capable of learning and are happier when doing so.

So how do Teddy and I begin? Following the guidelines in the book, we’re going to use known commands that Teddy is already familiar with and the word printed on a flashcard.  Hopefully, Teddy will make an association with the written word.

Teddy is very familiar with the following words or commands:

  1. SIT: sitting for a short time.
  2. DOWN: lowering his entire body to the ground.
  3. STAY: hold his position for a short time.

Flashcards are ready. The author recommended that you use two versions of the flashcard. One displays the word and the second is picture representation of the word.

We are going to start with one word at a time, and the first word will be “sit.”
