Hi there, friends! It’s me, Dr. Teddy again—a golden retriever with a super wiggly tail and lots of love to give. Some people call me “Doctor” because I know a secret about happiness, but really, I have a lot of love to share (yes, I love belly rubs and treats too). Today, I want to let you in on my secret: dogs and humans have a fantastic bond, and there’s even a bit of science behind why we make each other so happy.
How Dog Hugs Make Magic
Before I tell you about the science stuff, let me tell you about my human, Mom, and me. When I was just a tiny, clumsy puppy, Mom looked deep into my eyes and I felt a special spark, like magic fireworks inside my heart! If you’ve ever hugged your dog or had a puppy kiss, you probably know the feeling, too.
Guess what? Scientists have a special word for this: “oxytocin.” That’s a big word, but it’s just a happy, love-boosting thing that zooms around your body when you look at someone you love (like your dog or your Mom!). When you and I stare at each other, both our bodies get filled with love magic. Isn’t that awesome?
Why Dogs Are Like Superheroes for Your Heart
But wait, there’s more! Being close to a dog (like me!) helps you feel calm when you’re sad, mad, or worried. There’s a thing inside your body called “cortisol”—it pops up when you’re stressed, kind of like a warning siren. But when you pet your dog, the siren gets quiet. You feel better, and your heart even gets healthier and stronger.
Scientists discovered that if you have a dog, your heart might beat happily, your blood pressure could be lower, and you might even be healthier when you grow up. All that, just from letting me sleep on your feet or toss a tennis ball for me!
How Dogs See Their Favorite Humans
Now, let me tell you a secret from all the dogs everywhere: you are our whole world. When you come home (maybe you smell funny, but I don’t mind), when you play fetch with us, or when you read a book and we curl up beside you—we love it all.
You give us toys and treats, sure, but the best part is just being with you. If you’re sad, we’ll lay our head in your lap. If you’re happy, we’ll wiggle our tails so hard they might fly off! Scientists say dogs and humans have been best buddies for thousands of years, so we’ve learned what you’re feeling, and you’ve learned to read our puppy eyes.
The Best Kind of Love
Love between dogs and humans is more than just a scientific phenomenon; it is a profound connection that transcends the physical. It’s all about laughing together, going for walks, cuddling on rainy days, and feeling safe and happy, like you belong to each other.
Having a dog helps you feel less lonely, gives you a friend to play outside with, and fills your house with joy. Even if the science weren’t true, I’d still want to snuggle up with you.
One Last Puppy Promise
Before I finish this letter, I want you to remember: Dogs love you just the way you are. If you ever feel sad or worried, look into your dog’s eyes or give them a gentle hug. I’ll be there with a wagging tail, waiting to share our magic heart-connection.
Thank you, Mom, for being my special human. I’ll love you forever—with every single wag, every goofy bark, and every sloppy kiss.
P.S. Don’t forget the ear scratches! They’re the best. 🐾
