What is Alzheimer’s disease? Why have I been involved for ten years raising funds for research and a cure?
In the mid-1980s, my beloved grandmother needed care and moved into my home. She was in her late 90s and having cognitive problems. At first, I thought that she was disoriented because she left everything familiar. I had never heard of Alzheimer’s and was unaware of the symptoms. It wasn’t until many years later that I learned about Alzheimer’s and recognized my grandmother’s symptoms.
Moving forward in time, ten years ago, my husband’s aunt developed Alzheimer’s. Remembering the helplessness and isolation I felt, I wanted to do something to help Aunt Lorraine.
“Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disease that causes worsening dementia and eventually leads to death. Alzheimer’s is different from mild forgetfulness that can be part of the normal aging process. Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of dementia, accounting for 60 to 80 percent of cases. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but treatments can decrease symptoms and improve the quality of life.”

Participating in Alzheimer’s walks was an immediate opportunity. So I became involved with the Alzheimer’s Association and formed a team. Membership grew as family members and friends joined the team, “For Aunt Lorraine.” Each year we raised money for Alzheimer’s research.
Over time, every member of our team either knew someone with dementia or had a family member that was directly impacted by Alzheimer’s. So we retained the team name but began listing the names of the people that we wanted to honor on the front of our team shirts. Each year I print new shirts for the team displaying the growing list of names of family and friends with Alzheimer’s. This year I was not able to provide new shirts for my team members. So everyone wore a shirt from years past, and our team was still visible.
It was a beautiful day in a beautiful new location. The Walk planners relocated this year’s walk to the Bishop Ranch area in San Ramon, and it was great. Our doggies participated too. Candy rode in her stroller, and Teddy walked.
Even though the prognosis for Alzheimer’s remains bleak, we will continue our efforts to END Alzheimer’s!
