Wave Diplomacy

Coffee Thoughts: Wave Diplomacy

Every morning when I head out for my walk, I practice a small form of diplomacy.

Not the kind conducted in government buildings or across long conference tables. Mine happens on sidewalks, along quiet neighborhood streets, and sometimes across freshly cut lawns.

I call it wave diplomacy.

As I walk through the neighborhood, I often pass the crews that help keep our community looking beautiful. Landscapers trimming hedges, gardeners tending flowerbeds, workers loading tools into trucks after a long morning of labor. Many of them are Hispanic men and women who work incredibly hard to care for properties that most of us enjoy.

Over time, I developed a simple habit. When I see someone working, I lift my hand and give a small wave.

Sometimes the response is immediate and warm. A wave back. A smile. Maybe even a cheerful good morning.

Sometimes it is quieter. A nod. A glance of acknowledgment before returning to the job at hand.

And sometimes there is no response at all.

For a moment, that used to puzzle me. Did they not see me? Did they think I was interrupting their work? Was my greeting unwelcome?

But the longer I walk and the more I observe the world around me, the more I understand something deeper.

For many people, especially those who feel watched, judged, or misunderstood, even the simplest human interaction can carry risk.

Imagine what it must feel like to move through your workday aware that some people may already have an opinion about you before a single word is spoken. Imagine knowing that a label may be placed on you simply because of how you look, the language you speak, or where someone assumes you came from.

Stereotypes are heavy things to carry. They can quietly follow a person from one job site to another, from one neighborhood to the next, even when someone is simply trying to do their work and provide for their family.

When people feel that weight, it makes sense that caution becomes a form of protection. Avoiding eye contact, staying focused on the job, and keeping interactions brief.

It is not unkindness.

It is survival.

And once I began to see that possibility, my small wave took on a different meaning.

I no longer think of it as a greeting that needs to be returned.

I think of it as a signal.

A signal that says I see the person in front of me, not the assumptions that sometimes surround them.

A signal that says your work matters.

A signal that says your presence in this shared space is part of the rhythm of our community.

Some days the wave is returned.

Some days it is not.

But the diplomacy still happens.

Diplomacy, at its simplest, is the effort to create understanding between people who may not know each other’s stories.

And sometimes the first step toward understanding is simply choosing not to look away.

Coffee Thought

In a complicated world, recognition is powerful.

To be seen as a human being instead of a category.

To be greeted instead of avoided.

To be acknowledged instead of overlooked.

Sometimes a wave is just a wave.

And sometimes it is a quiet way of saying something much bigger.

You matter.
You belong here.
We share this morning.
