Hello there! Dr. Teddy here, your resident golden retriever and professional tail-wagger. Our Summer girl is quite possibly the Michael Phelps of golden retrievers and has been dog-paddling up a storm lately, so it was time to talk about something close to my big, furry heart: water! Why, you ask, do so many of us dogs adore splashing around in water? Well, grab a treat, settle in, and I’ll explain it all to you—as a paw-fessional, of course.
Born to Swim
First of all, some of us are born with water in our souls. Take me, for example. Bear and I might not be as speedy as Summer but give us a dog-friendly pool, and we’re happy pups. The same goes for my Labrador Retriever buddies, as well as neighbors like Portuguese Water Dogs and those snazzy Irish Water Spaniels with their fancy curls. Our ancestors worked alongside humans, fetching nets, swimming through waves, and being generally awesome. That instinct is still alive and well in many of us today!
And then there’s the pure joy of it. Ever tried zoomies near a lake or chasing a stick into the water? Trust me, it’s like a party where the world feels weightless, and you can’t stop wagging your tail.
Why Water Is Pure Magic for Dogs (Not Just for Splashing!)
- Adventure Awaits!
Water equals adventure time! Whether it’s a dip in a sparkly blue pool or splashing around at the beach, the water is like an open-world game. We sniff, paddle, glide, and keep an eye out for fish (spoiler alert: they’re way too fast for us to catch).
- Cooling Down
Have you seen all this fur? On hot days, a splashy swim cools us down better than sticking our tongue out for hours.
- Tail-Wagging Workouts
Swimming is great for staying fit! It’s easy on our joints (that’s extra important for us golden retrievers, who might be a bit, er, curvier around the edges as we age). Plus, paddling works all our muscles while letting us be graceful (okay, “graceful” might be a stretch for me when I belly flop).
- Bonding Time
And the best part? It’s spending time with you! Whether tossing a ball, exploring new water spots, or cheering us on, your encouragement makes every swim extra special.
Dog-Friendly Pools and the Ultimate Splish-Splash Experience
Now, I know not all humans can “pop over to a lake” whenever they want, so I HIGHLY recommend dog-friendly pools (yep, they’re a real thing). Think clear water, ramps for easy access, and no sneaky currents to worry about. These pools are designed for wagging tails and great big splashes. Summer, Bear, and I give them four paws up!
Dog Swimming Safety Tips (Because Even We Need Lifeguards!)
Before you pack up the water wings—I mean, life jackets!—here are a few pawsome safety tips to keep your swim sessions safe and fun:
- Supervise Always: Even the best swimmers need their humans to keep an eye out!
- Make It Gradual: New to water? Take your time while we build confidence. (Patience = treats/plenty of tail wags!)
- Life Jackets: For pups who are still learning to swim or swimming in deeper spots, dog life jackets are a must-have. (Pro tip: Pick one with a handle for extra-easy scooping.)
Note: I wear the green lifejacket, Bear wears the red lifejacket, and Summer wears the pink lifejacket.
- Rinse Off Afterward: Chlorine, saltwater, and mysterious pond goo aren’t great for our fur or skin. Please rinse us with fresh water after swim time.
- Be Alert to Hazards: Watch out for algae, strong currents, or hidden objects in the water. (Friendly suggestion from Dr. Teddy!)
Final Thoughts From Dr. Teddy
Swimming is more than just a fun day out for us dogs. It’s instinctive, exhilarating, and downright magical. Whether we’re splashing in a dog-friendly pool or practicing our majestic doggy paddle in a lake, water brings us closer to nature, closer to you, and closer to pure joy.
And hey, remember to give us a big cuddle when we get out. Wet fur may not smell great to you, but it’s the scent of happiness for us.
Well, that’s all from me. Summer is currently drying off in the sun, and Bear is looking for squirrels. Time to head out for more adventures. Got a favorite swimming spot? Please don’t keep it a secret! Drop a comment below—we’d love to hear all about it. Until next time, here’s to wagging tails and wild splashes!
Paws and kisses,
Dr. Teddy 🐾
