Why Teddy, Bear, and Summer Wear Life Jackets in the Pool

Teddy, Bear, and Summer are more than just pets—they’re family. Jim and I understand the importance of ensuring the safety of all our family members, including our dogs, especially when they’re around water. This sense of responsibility and care is why we believe life jackets are a crucial part of pool time, and here’s why.

The Benefits of Life-Jackets for Dogs

Added Protection

Life jackets provide an extra layer of security that can significantly reduce the risk of drowning, regardless of your dog’s size or swimming abilities. Even the most enthusiastic swimmers can encounter difficulties, and having that added buoyancy can make all the difference.

Increased Buoyancy

One of the key benefits of a life jacket is that it helps dogs stay afloat, making it easier for them to paddle around without getting exhausted. This is particularly useful for older dogs or breeds that aren’t natural swimmers.

Personal Experience

Teddy, Bear, and Summer are Golden Retrievers, a breed known to be strong swimmers. Summer is a strong swimmer, but Teddy and Bear are not so much. In fact, Bear displays high anxiety, if not terror, at times. Dogs are individuals like people, and even though the Golden retriever breed is recognized as strong swimmers, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some golden retrievers like Bear that are not excellent swimmers.

This is the first time we have had a pool and Teddy and Bear’s water exposure was minimal before this. The only opportunity they had to play in the water was in livestock watering troughs, which were very shallow, and they never experienced a need to swim. Some people grow up without learning to swim because they didn’t spend much time around water? Well, the same goes for dogs! If a dog hasn’t had much contact with water, especially during their early puppy days, they might grow somewhat wary of it. That is true for both Teddy and Bear. But they are learning! I am much more comfortable with them wearing life jackets.

We have a different color lifejacket for each dog. Teddy's is green. Bear's life jacket is red, and Summer's is pink. We purchased them from Amazon based on breed and size/weight. Let me know if you would like the link, and I'll post it.
Peace of Mind

Knowing that your dog is safer in the water with a life jacket offers a profound sense of peace. It transforms pool time from a potential source of stress to a more relaxed and enjoyable experience, free from constant worry about possible accidents. This relief and relaxation are invaluable to dog owners.

Easier Retrieval

Many life jackets come with handles, making retrieving your dog from the pool easier if they fall in accidentally. This feature can be a lifesaver in emergencies.

Enhanced Enjoyment

Wearing a life jacket can also make dogs feel more stable and secure, encouraging them to enjoy the water more. This increased confidence can turn a nervous dog into a happy swimmer, bringing joy to their pool time. As dog owners, seeing our pets enjoying themselves and feeling confident in the water can be a genuinely heartwarming and exciting experience.

Additional Pool Safety Tips for Dogs

While life jackets are incredibly beneficial, there are other safety measures you should consider to keep your dogs safe around the pool:

  • Supervision: Always supervise your dog near or in the pool, even if it is wearing a life jacket.
  • Safe Exits: Teach your dog how to exit the pool safely using the steps or a designated ramp.
  • Secure Area: Keep the pool area safe with a fence or cover to prevent unsupervised access.
  • Rinse Off: Rinse off your dog after swimming to remove chlorine or salt from their fur, which can be harmful if ingested.
  • Monitor Energy Levels: Be mindful of your dog’s behavior and energy level in the water. If they seem tired, it’s time for a break.
  • Gradual Introduction: Introduce your dog to the pool gradually, allowing them to get comfortable with the water at their own pace.
  • Learn Doggy CPR: Consider learning basic doggy CPR and emergency first aid.

Incorporating life jackets into your pool routine can make a world of difference for both you and your dogs. For us, it’s made pool time safer and far more enjoyable. If you’re still on the fence about getting a life jacket for your dog, think about the many benefits and peace of mind it can bring.
