There’s a unique day in May that I eagerly mark on my calendar each year—National Dog Mom’s Day. It’s a day exclusively dedicated to celebrating the love, laughter, messy moments, and unconditional bond we share with our furry kids. This year, on May 11th, I’m thrilled to share some distinct ways we can make this day truly unforgettable, not just for us but for our beloved pups, too.
The Joy of Adoption
The first time I celebrated National Dog Mom’s Day was in 2019. It was a momentous occasion—I had just retired from SRVUSD, we were moving, and I was about to welcome Teddy into my life. I adopted Teddy from Argus Golden Retriever’s in Dublin, California. The owner and breeder, Laura Finco, was my friend and someone I had worked with at SRVUSD for many years. I am familiar with Teddy’s biological mom, Matilda, but I am fully Teddy’s adoptive “mom.” Adoption is the most beautiful start to the dog mom’s journey. If you’ve been dreaming of puppy cuddles and wagging tails, what better day to welcome a new member into your family than on Dog Mom’s Day?
Adventure Awaits
Teddy and Bear, my adventurous duo, remind me daily of the joy found in simple walks and the thrill of exploring new trails. Planning a special hike or a leisurely walk in nature is not just about physical activity; it’s about discovering the world through your dog’s eyes. Pack some snacks, grab a leash, and embark on an adventure to strengthen your bond.
Baking Love by the Spoonful
My kitchen has witnessed many experiments, from failed cakes to spot-on biscuits, and safe vanilla ice cream. Nothing beats Teddy’s excitement when he knows we’re baking homemade doggie treats or making ice cream. It’s a messy, but the wagging tails and eager eyes are worth every second.
Spa Day, Furry Style
Bear loves a good pamper session, especially after a spirited playdate with Summer or a long walk. A spa day at home, with plenty of cuddles, brushing, and maybe even a gentle massage, is the perfect way to unwind together. These quiet moments of care and attention not only relax Bear but also bring me joy and deepen our connection beyond words.
Picnic in the Park or Backyard
Imagine a sunny day, a blanket spread on the grass, and a basket filled with treats for you and your pup—this is my idea of a perfect Dog Mom’s Day picnic. It’s a simple pleasure, but these moments of shared happiness and relaxation fill our days with love and make memories that last a lifetime.
The Gift of Friendship
Hosting a playdate for Teddy, Bear, and Summer is not just a treat for them but a heartwarming experience for me. It’s a moment of shared joy, a chance to connect, and a reminder of the importance of social connections, not just for our dogs but also for us.
Indoor Camping Adventures
Rainy days have a magic of their own. Setting up a fort in the familyroom and playing ball with Teddy and Bear has become one of our favorite ways to spend a cozy evening. Yes, there’s a lot of pillow stealing. Bear loves to steal pillows. But it’s in these moments of playful imagination that our bond grows deeper.
Capturing Memories
Each Dog Mom’s Day, I make it a point to capture the love and chaos of our life together in photos. These pictures are more than just images, they are treasures, reminders of our shared moments and the love that fills our days. They bring back the laughter, the cuddles, and the love that make every day with our pups a blessing.
Café Dates and New Experiences
Exploring new cafes and restaurants with Teddy and Bear is on our bucket list. It’s not just about the change of scenery but about experiencing the world together, making new friends, and enjoying the simple pleasure of a shared outing.
Being a dog mom to Teddy and Bear has taught me more about love, patience, and joy than I could have imagined. National Dog Mom’s Day isn’t just another date on the calendar—it’s a celebration of the endless love, the countless adventures, and the unbreakable bond we share with our furry best friends. This year, as we celebrate this special day, remember the laughter, cherish the cuddles, and hold onto the love that makes every day with our pups a blessing.
