Why does it feel like the people who bring kindness, generosity, laughter, and goodness into the world leave us too soon, while those who spread anger and cruelty seem to stick around?
I know Dolly Parton was 80. By any measure, she lived a long, extraordinary, and incredibly successful life. But to me, Dolly never seemed old. Her spirit felt ageless. Today, 80 just feels too young.
Dolly knew what it was like to grow up with very little. She understood how important education could be for a child. Her father couldn’t read or write, and Dolly said she started her Imagination Library to honor him. What began in 1995 as a small program giving free books to kids in her home county grew into an international effort that has delivered hundreds of millions of books to children.
When wildfires hit her beloved East Tennessee in 2016, she helped families who lost their homes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dolly donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to support research for the Moderna vaccine.
She could laugh at herself. She never needed to prove she was the smartest or most important person in the room. She was glamorous and bold, but always knew who she was and where she came from.
- Somewhere tonight, an adult received a Dolly Parton Imagination Library book as a small child and discovered the magic of reading.
- Somewhere, a songwriter picked up a guitar because she heard Dolly.
- Somewhere, there’s a family whose life got a little easier after a disaster because Dolly Parton cared.
- Somewhere, there’s a young girl growing up with very little who can look at Dolly’s story and see that where you start doesn’t decide where you can go.
And there are millions of us who watched this funny, brilliant, rhinestone-covered woman show that strength and kindness can exist in the same person.
That lives on in every child who opened one of her books, every person she helped, every musician she inspired, every life touched by her generosity, and everyone who saw her example and chose to be a little kinder.
Maybe that’s the closest answer I’ll ever find to the question I asked today.
