Baby Bear and the Night Visitor

Baby Bear knew someone had visited overnight. He didn’t need to check the Ring camera. He didn’t need a witness, fingerprints, or any of those fancy TV lab tests. Bear had something better: his nose.

That morning, when he walked into the backyard, he stopped. He lifted his head, sniffed the air, and his face changed. Someone had been there.

Bear settled into his usual spot by the flowerpots. From there, he could watch the lawn, guard the geraniums, and look especially handsome as he investigated.

He sniffed the air again. Ralph. Ralph the raccoon had visited during the night.

Bear and Ralph aren’t really friends, but they have a kind of professional understanding. Ralph sneaks in at night to check things out, and Bear examines the evidence the next morning.

Usually, Ralph leaves without filing a report.

This time was no different.

The backyard camera showed that Ralph arrived in the dark. He didn’t come to the front door, didn’t ask if Bear was awake, and didn’t stop by the window to wave hello.

Instead, he went straight to the vegetable garden. That seemed suspicious.

Bear started to put the clues together. Maybe Ralph heard there were strawberries in the garden. Maybe he was checking if the tomatoes were ripe. Or maybe a secret raccoon group sent him to see if Jim’s vegetables were ready for a midnight raid. Or maybe Ralph was just being nosy.

Bear understood that possibility very well.

As the Chief Investigator of Backyard Affairs, Bear knew he should check the garden himself. But there were problems. Some places were off-limits. Digging for clues had gotten him in trouble before, and stepping on the vegetables never earned him any praise.

So Bear decided to investigate from a safe distance.

He sniffed the breeze for clues, looked over the grass, and listened for any strange sounds near the greenhouse. There was nothing. Ralph had disappeared as quietly as he had arrived.

The case seemed simple. Ralph had come onto the property, checked the vegetable garden, found nothing worth taking, and left.

But then Bear considered another possibility.

What if Ralph had not come looking for food at all?

Maybe Ralph had heard about Bear’s new titles: Office Manager, Employee of the Month, and Director of Household Security. Maybe he wanted career advice, or maybe he was curious how Bear managed all those jobs and still found time for meals, naps, and barking for fun.

If so, Ralph had made a big mistake. He went to the vegetable garden instead of Bear’s office.

Bear would have gladly explained that being successful takes dedication, good hearing, a reliable sense of time, and the ability to look very busy whenever someone walks in.

Treats also help.

Still, Bear felt a little hurt. Ralph had come to his backyard and hadn’t even stopped to say hello. No polite knock, no calling card, and definitely no hostess gift. Not even one tomato.

Bear sat up straighter among the flowers and thought about giving Ralph an official warning. From now on, nighttime visitors should announce themselves, stay out of the garden, and schedule meetings during Bear’s business hours.

Then came the final twist in the investigation.

Bear realized that while he had been sitting among the geraniums guarding the flowers, Ralph had gone directly to the vegetables.

The raccoon had not avoided Bear’s security system. He had outsmarted it.

Bear looked at the garden, then back at the house. He decided this detail didn’t belong in the official report.

His conclusion would be much simpler:
The flowers were safe.
The investigator was handsome.
And Ralph remained at large.
