On this Veterans Day, my heart is full of gratitude for all the brave men and women who have served our country honorably. My first thoughts are always of my dad, CY (AA) Donald E. Kranz, and his years of service in the Navy; I am reminded of his sacrifices to keep our country safe during WWII aboard the Lexington CV2. But it’s not just my dad who deserves recognition. Millions of veterans have served and continue to serve with courage and dedication. That’s why it’s essential to understand the history of Veterans Day.
This is a treasured photo of my Veteran, my Dad, CY (AA) Donald E. Kranz, USS Lexington CV2. He was so proud of his military service!
Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th in the United States, but do we know why? It’s a day where we honor those who have bravely served our country during war and peace. But how did this tradition begin?
The origins of Veterans’ Day can be traced back to the Armistice Agreement that ended World War I on November 11th, 1918. This day marked the end of one of the deadliest conflicts in human history and was celebrated by many countries as a day of remembrance for those who sacrificed their lives during the war.
In 1926, Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance of Armistice Day to be celebrated on November 11th. The day was meant to honor the veterans of World War I and promote peace. However, after World War II, there was a push to recognize all veterans who have served in any war, not just those from World War I.
In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued a proclamation that officially changed the holiday’s name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. He stated, “On that day, let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought valiantly on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores to preserve our heritage of freedom.” This change also recognized the contributions of veterans from World War II and the Korean War.
Since then, Veterans’ Day has been a day to honor and thank all veterans who have selflessly served our country. It’s a day to remember the bravery and sacrifices of those who have gone above and beyond to protect our nation. It’s also a time to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of their service.
Today, Veterans’ Day is celebrated with parades, ceremonies, and other events across the country. It’s an opportunity for communities to unite and show gratitude towards our veterans. So, this November 11th, let us take a moment to thank and honor the brave men and women who have served our nation with pride and dedication. We owe them a debt of gratitude that can never truly be repaid.
As the saying goes, “All gave some, some gave all.” On this Veterans’ Day, remember and celebrate those who have given their all for our country. Let’s show them that their sacrifices will never be forgotten and that we are eternally grateful for their service. Happy Veterans’ Day!

Nikki, what a wonderful tribute to your Dad and all who served. Your Dad’s generation was a proud one. I think of all those who have served our country and it’s humbling. I don’t think today’s generation has the same patriotism that men and women had then. Thanks for the beautiful article. Love, Karen
Thank you, Karen!
