Recently our next-door neighbor’s house was burglarized. I don’t know the details of the crime, but I had to ask myself what deterred the burglars from choosing our house. I believe the burglars did not want to encounter Teddy and the Bear.
Owning a pet dog can be one of life’s greatest joys, but it might also help keep your family safe. It’s true—having a beloved pet can be an effective crime deterrent for your home.
Dogs have long been known for their loyalty and love to their human companions, and this same devotion has extended to help protect our families from potential threats. Most burglars or intruders will think twice before attempting to enter a home with a large or small dog inside. After all, who wants to deal with angry and sharp teeth when trying to break in? Dogs possess an impressive sense of hearing and smell, which makes them natural alarm systems against would-be criminals. A barking dog can be quite intimidating to an intruder—they may hear the barking and quickly decide that your home is not worth the risk.
Our beloved pets are a deterrent for possible threats and provide us with love, support, and companionship. Owning a dog gives us something to care for and look after, which can be incredibly beneficial in times of stress or anxiety. They have been known to brighten up even the gloomiest of days. Our lovable dogs will always stand guard over us, protecting against potential danger while providing unconditional love along the way.
Data from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics indicates that houses without dogs are 300 times more likely to be burglarized than homes with one or more canine companions. Additionally, many security companies now offer services meant explicitly for deterring intruders using canines, such as alarm systems that sound off when a barking dog onsite notices movement in the vicinity.
Additionally, research has further illuminates how effective these furry friends can prevent crime. For example, the University of North Carolina surveyed nearly 400 convicted felons and found that 82% said they would not attempt to break into a house if they knew a dog was present. The results of this study are precise: having a barking dog is one of the most reliable ways to protect your home and family from burglars.
In essence, dogs make excellent crime deterrents regardless of size or breed. They can be seen as an extra pair of eyes for homeowners, alerting them to potential dangers and making criminals think twice before attempting to break in. With their loyalty and bark providing an added layer of security, it is easy to understand why so many people consider owning a dog an effective way to keep their homes and families safe.
Owning a pet dog can be one of life’s greatest joys, and it also provides an effective crime deterrent for your home. Not only will our beloved pets protect us from potential threats, but they will also provide us with love, support, and companionship.

Agree 100%. Our Millie knew the difference between family and someone she didn’t know. Miss her barking when someone was at the door that she didn’t know.
