Hill House is in the Mother Lode Country of Arnold, California. It has been our reconstruction project for several years now. We bought it while my dad was alive, and I am grateful that we had many short family vacations there. Recently we traveled to Hill House for refuge and a safe place while repairs on the Tracy house were proceeding. Then on October 9, 2019, the 2nd phase of the PG&E power outage began at 3:30 pm. Twenty-six hours later, power was restored. The massive power shut down across California was necessary to prevent wildfires. I am grateful for fire protection proactivity, but I am also very dependent on electricity. If the outage hadn’t occurred so close to the water disaster in our Tracy home, I think I would have had a better perspective.
Like everyone else in Northern California, we tried to stock up on food, water, batteries, and other supplies before the outage. Both the market and hardware store in Arnold were filled with people with the same purpose. We purchased a battery-run radio, and it was our only link to the outside world and status updates on the power outage.
Before the outage, I committed to reduce my paper footprint and go paperless. All my books and magazines are now digital. I couldn’t access any of my reading materials without power. Duh!
The quiet solitude resulting from the power outage was positive in some ways. I was more observant of my surroundings. I watched a small squirrel collecting and burying nuts for winter, and I was impressed with the little guy’s efforts! At night there was absolutely no light pollution, and the stars were crystal clear. I could see more stars and constellations than in a city location. It was stunning!
The Statewide power outage triggered a new awareness, and we are now researching generators. There are very few permanent residents in this area, but I could hear the hum of a generator motor in the distance. Smart prepared people.
