In Search Of My Night Visitors

Unseen Life After Dark

When the sun dips below the horizon, and the world quiets, a bustling nightlife begins in my backyard. Over the months, I’ve realized that my little patch of earth is a nocturnal hotspot, teeming with activity. The thrill of discovery is palpable as I ponder the possibilities-a cat, raccoons, and possums could be the culprits. Teddy and Bear have been on the job trying to help me with their superior sense of smell.

The Mystery Mulch Movers

One of the first signs of my night visitors was the seemingly random piles of mulch scattered across the yard. Initially, this was a baffling sight. Who or what was responsible for these nightly rearrangements? My top suspects quickly became apparent when I remembered the raccoons I often encountered at my Arnold, CA, property. Known for their dexterous paws and curious nature, raccoons are notorious for digging up yards in search of food.

Capturing the Nightlife

Determined to glimpse the mysterious nighttime activities, I set up my trusty Browning Strikeforce field cameras, which I used to capture wildlife in Arnold. These cameras are equipped with a motion sensor that can detect even the slightest movement, and they can take high-quality videos or photos day and night. Each camera is weatherproof, ensuring they can withstand the elements, and they have a long battery life, so you can leave them out for extended periods without worry.

Setting up these cameras around the yard was no small feat. I had to consider the best locations to capture the most activity, which required some trial and error. I also had to ensure they were positioned correctly to avoid triggering false alarms, such as a swaying branch. Often, I would wake up eager to check the footage, only to find a blank screen or a video triggered by a swaying branch. But the patience and effort were worth it when I finally captured the first glimpse of my night visitors.

Raccoons - If you've noticed some late-night activity in your garden, it might be raccoons digging through your wood chip mulch. These clever critters often hunt for a tasty treat; your garden could offer them a buffet. Raccoons have a knack for locating insects, grubs, and other small invertebrates that love to hide beneath mulch. Their keen sense of smell guides them to these hidden snacks, leading them to dig and forage through the layers of wood chips. Whether you're a gardener, wildlife enthusiast, or homeowner, understanding this behavior can help you appreciate the nightly visitors and perhaps find a way to coexist harmoniously.
Encounters

Spotting the neighborhood cat was a delightful surprise. This sleek and stealthy visitor often prowls the yard, perhaps searching for mice or enjoying a nocturnal stroll.

This is the neighborhood black-and-white cat I have seen many times and encountered on my front porch. I'm sure it's feral, but it is pretty friendly
The Joy of Coexistence

Though some might see these night visitors as pests, I find them fascinating. There’s something magical about knowing that a whole world of activity is unfolding outside our windows while we sleep. These creatures are harmless, and I have no desire to get rid of them. Instead, I cherish observing and photographing them, adding to my collection of wildlife moments. It’s a joyous celebration of coexistence.

Posssums - Possums are fascinating creatures that play a unique role in our gardens. One of the most notable aspects of possum behavior is their eating habits. These nocturnal foragers have a diverse diet, feasting on fruits, insects, and even small animals. If you've noticed disturbances in your garden mulch, it's likely because possums are digging in search of food. Their keen sense of smell helps them locate insects and grubs beneath the surface. While it might be frustrating to see your garden turned over, remember that possums help manage pest populations naturally. Next time you spot a possum, appreciate its role in the intricate web of our garden ecosystem.
A Call for Conservation

Living harmoniously with nature is a beautiful thing. My backyard visitors remind me of the importance of cohabitating with the wildlife around us. No matter how small, each creature plays a role in our ecosystem. We can develop a deeper connection with the natural world by respecting their space and understanding their behaviors. It’s a call to action for conservation.

Join the Adventure

If you’re intrigued by discovering your backyard’s nighttime visitors, I encourage you to set up a field camera. You never know what delightful surprises you might find. Whether it’s a curious raccoon, a prowling cat, or an elusive possum, there’s a whole world waiting to be discovered after dark.

I was surprised to see a gray fox in my backyard in Tracy, California. Although I knew we had coyotes, I had no idea our area had gray foxes. These elusive creatures are fascinating, primarily due to their unique behaviors and adaptability. Gray foxes are omnivores, enjoying a varied diet of small mammals, birds, insects, fruits, and nuts. This varied menu allows them to thrive in diverse habitats, from dense forests to suburban neighborhoods where they can scavenge for human food waste. One of their most remarkable traits is their ability to climb trees, thanks to their retractable, hooked claws—something quite rare among members of the Canidae family. Primarily nocturnal, they are masters at staying out of sight, which adds to their mysterious charm. Interestingly, gray foxes form lifelong monogamous pairs and create deep dens in hollow trees, blending a sense of home wherever they roam.
