In California, El Niño usually brings wetter winters, stronger Pacific storms, and more snow in the mountains. It can also increase the risk of flooding in some areas. Still, every El Niño is different, and local weather can change a lot from one event to the next.
One positive thing I learned is that El Niño isn’t all bad news. While it can make winters wetter in California, it often leads to fewer hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean. Scientists think the wind-pattern changes caused by El Niño make it harder for hurricanes to form and grow. Hurricanes can still happen, but this shows how one weather pattern can affect different parts of the world in very different ways.
So, should we worry about this?
I think it’s better to get ready than to worry. Now is a good time to clean gutters, check your roof for repairs, clear out drains, and review emergency supplies before winter. If you garden, make sure young plants and outdoor structures are secure before storm season.
If you have pets, keep extra food and any needed medications on hand in case bad weather interrupts services. It’s also a good idea to keep their ID tags and microchip information up to date.
The good news is there’s no immediate emergency. Scientists will keep watching conditions through summer and fall, so communities will have time to prepare if stronger impacts seem likely.
