Why Does a Dog Choose a Favorite Person?

I’ve often wondered how a dog picks its favorite person.

With Teddy, I didn’t have to wonder. He chose me. There was something between us right from the start, a bond I couldn’t quite explain but definitely felt. I was his person, and he was my soul dog.

Bear is different.

I feed Bear and give him his medicine when he needs it. I keep an eye on his routines, notice when he needs to go outside, watch his health, and handle most of his daily care. During the day, Bear follows me everywhere. If I move from one room to another, chances are my Golden Retriever is right behind me.

You’d think all that would make me Bear’s favorite person.

But I’m not so sure.

Then Jim shows up. Suddenly, Bear’s tail starts thumping. He gets excited and happy in a way that feels different from how he reacts to me. And I can’t help but think, “Wait a minute. I’m the one who feeds you!”

It turns out dogs don’t pick their favorite people based on who does the most for them. Researchers who study dogs and their bonds with people have found that dogs form relationships for many of the same complicated reasons humans do. Food matters, but it’s just one part. Dogs respond to positive interactions, attention, play, affection, feeling safe, familiarity, and even how someone communicates with them. Personality matters too.

Some dogs are drawn to people whose energy matches theirs. A playful dog might bond with someone who encourages play, while a cautious dog may stick close to someone who makes things feel safe and predictable. Sometimes, a dog just connects with a person in a way that’s hard to explain.

There’s also a big difference between attachment and excitement.

A dog’s most dramatic greeting doesn’t always show who matters most to him. The person who gets the big tail-wag might just be linked to excitement or anticipation. Meanwhile, the person a dog quietly follows from room to room might be just as important, offering a sense of security.

That made me see Bear’s behavior differently.

Maybe I’ve been thinking Bear has to choose between Jim and me. But maybe he doesn’t. When Bear follows me around during the day, it’s not less meaningful than when he wags his tail for Jim. He’s choosing to stay close to me. He knows my routines, watches what I do, and I’m part of his daily life.

Jim brings out something different in Bear. There’s a clear excitement when Bear sees him, and I’ve come to think their relationship is just different from mine with Bear.

That’s one of the most wonderful things about dogs. They don’t always split their love evenly, and they definitely don’t show it the same way with everyone.
Teddy and Bear have shown me that firsthand. Teddy chose me in a way I’ll always treasure. The bond we formed became one of the best relationships of my life.

Bear joined our family, but he wasn’t here to recreate what I had with Teddy. Bear is his own dog, with his own personality, his own heart, and his own relationships to make.

Maybe Bear has picked Jim as his special person. If so, I get it. But when I get up from my desk and hear those familiar paws behind me, following me into the next room for no real reason, I’m reminded of something else. Maybe dogs don’t always have only one favorite person. Maybe they have favorite people for different reasons.

One person might mean excitement. Another might mean play. Someone else might mean comfort, food, safety, routine, or companionship. And sometimes, the person a dog loves most isn’t the one who gets the biggest tail wag. Sometimes, love is a Golden Retriever quietly getting up and following you into the next room.
Just because that’s where you are.
