Bear and the Case of the Suspicious Squirrels

Every morning, before breakfast and before Mom even finishes her coffee, I begin my backyard security patrol.

This is a very important job because our backyard has squirrels. Suspicious squirrels.

Some people think squirrels are just fluffy little creatures that run around collecting nuts and flicking their tails. Those people are not trained investigators like I am.

I see things.

The first suspicious squirrel usually appears near the greenhouse fence. He likes to sit there pretending he is innocent. But I know better. He freezes completely when I look at him, which is exactly what someone would do if they were guilty. Naturally, I bark.

Mom tells me, “Good boy, Bear. Thank you for protecting us.”

You are welcome, Mom.

In the house, I race from window to window conducting advanced surveillance operations. Sometimes I run to the back door. Sometimes I run to the living room window. Sometimes I run back to the kitchen just in case the squirrel is circling the house unnoticed. You have to think strategically in this line of work.

Summer tries to help occasionally, but honestly, she gets distracted very easily. One minute, she is assisting with squirrel patrol, and the next, she finds a yellow ball and forgets the entire mission.

I take my responsibilities much more seriously.

Teddy used to understand these things perfectly. He was very wise and experienced in backyard matters. I believe he passed important detective skills down to me before becoming an angel supervisor.

Sometimes, when the squirrels become especially bold, they run along the fence right in front of me. I don’t wish to alarm anyone, but this is clearly organized behavior.

I immediately increase my barking volume to alert the household. Mom usually praises me for my bravery. Dad sometimes laughs, but I know, deep down, he appreciates my hard work, too. Families need protection, and suspicious squirrels cannot simply be allowed to run wild without supervision.

Sometimes the squirrels gather near the greenhouse where they hold very suspicious meetings under the trees. They chatter back and forth and flick their tails around like they are discussing important squirrel business.

I do not trust it.

One squirrel in particular likes to sit on top of the fence and stare directly at me through the window. He acts very calm, which honestly makes him even more suspicious.

Mom says, “Bear, he’s just sitting there.”

Exactly. That is what makes him a professional.

Occasionally, I rush outside to remind the squirrels that this backyard is under highly trained supervision. The squirrels immediately run up the trees, which proves they know I am in charge of security operations. I patrol the greenhouse very carefully because it requires extra protection. Mom loves her plants very much, and I take my responsibility as greenhouse security officer seriously. Sometimes I even inspect the flower pots for hidden squirrel activity. You can never be too careful.

By afternoon, I am usually exhausted from defending the property, monitoring squirrel activity, and performing perimeter checks around the fence line. Security work is not for the weak.

Still, I remain committed to the mission.

Because at the end of the day, protecting my family is the most important job in the world.

Even if Mom says the squirrels are “probably just being squirrels.”

I am not convinced. ❤️🐾

Mom’s Reflection

Bear truly does take his backyard responsibilities seriously. Every squirrel sighting becomes an urgent security event requiring immediate investigation and dramatic barking.

But honestly, I love watching him race around, convinced he is protecting all of us. Something is comforting about dogs and the important little jobs they give themselves.

In Bear’s mind, he is not simply chasing squirrels. He is watching over his family.

And maybe, in his own sweet way, he really is. ❤️🐾
