It was time to travel to the property in Arnold again. Usually, it is just Jim, Teddy, and me on the road. However, this was my first time taking a plant with me. I brought Bernie, one of my Maidenhair ferns. I know what you’re thinking, “Is she crazy? Maidenhair ferns are difficult to keep alive in the best conditions, and she is taking one on vacation?” Yep, I did.
Bernie was a great traveling companion. Bernie requires daily care, and I didn’t have a plant-sitter. So Bernie came with us. It was quite an adventure for everyone.
Plants are great traveling companions because they generally don’t require too much care. In addition, a plant can help you relax by providing some greenery in your hotel room. If you’re thinking of taking a plant on vacation with you, here are a few tips to ensure it goes smoothly!
- Choose a plant that doesn’t require too much water or sunlight.
- Note: A Maidenhair fern might not be the best choice for everyone to take on vacation.
- When traveling with plants, choose a destination that won’t be too hot or cold for your plant.
- Another thing to remember is the accommodations you’ll be staying in. If you’re staying in a hotel, make sure to call ahead and ask if they have any restrictions on plants in the rooms. Some hotels only allow small, potted plants, while others may not allow them at all. Who knew?
- Ensure you have a pot that’s big enough for your plant. You don’t want your plant to be cramped up in a tiny pot while you’re away from home!
- Just in case, pack some extra soil and a small watering can. It’s always better to be prepared than to have your plant suffer because you forgot to pack something important.
Now that you know how to take care of your plant on vacation, and you are as crazy as I am, have fun and enjoy your time away!
If you have any tips for taking plants on vacation, please share them in the comments below! I’m always looking for ways to make Bernie’s trips more enjoyable. Thanks for reading. I hope I gave you a chuckle or two!
Bernie even has her own catchphrase now. “Bernie, the Fernie gets around!” Contributed by my friend and artist extraordinaire, Eve Steccati Tanovitz
