COVID-19 and Masks

Do you have an opinion on COVID-19 and masks, Dr. Teddy?

Yes, I do. There are two known deterrents at this time — social distancing and masks. Mom was exposed to COVID-19 recently, and I know that she was scared. I make sure that mom always wears her mask whenever she goes anywhere, and her mask protected her this time.

Your mom was exposed to COVID-19?

Yes, Candy and I were worried! We need mom!

The following message from mom is Dr. Teddy approved.

At first, I didn’t think I would share my experience with COVID-19 in my blog because it was so insignificant compared to others’ suffering, but I changed my mind because of recent events and miss information. COVID-19 is a virus, and we have no immunity. The level of severity of those infected varies considerably, and far too many loved people have died. The total number of deaths from COVID-19 is so large it takes your breath away!

At worst, people with COVID-19 become deathly ill, while others become very ill but manage to recover because of excellent care. Then there are asymptomatic people infected with COVID-19 that exhibit no symptoms. My family has tried to control our behavior and our fear of COVID-19. However, we are stressed out worrying about the future, our health, medical care, the financial turmoil, educating our children/grandchildren, and still provide necessities.

What are the know deterrents at this time? Social distancing and masks. My mask protected me!

I had close contact with an asymptomatic medical assistant in a doctor’s office. Luckily, I learned of this exposure very quickly and immediately contacted my primary care physician.

Because of my age, the COVID-19 test was scheduled for the next day. Once in the examing room, fear kicked in. My doctor walked in, wearing full PPE! Which included gloves, gown, shoe covers, head cover, mask, respirator, eye protection, face shield, and goggles. Oh my God, this was real! The test itself wasn’t pleasant, but it wasn’t bad either. I went home and began taking my temperature hourly, and a storm began swirling in my brain! All of the big “What if” questions kicked around in my head! The simple questions like, “Did I wash my hands enough? Did I touch my face?” OMG, I touch my face all the time! The bigger question, “How will I handle things if I become very ill?” The biggest question, “What if I die?”

My dark thoughts show.
I took these pictures of the exam room to document the experience, but when the doctor walked in wearing full PPE, my heart sank through the floor, and I no longer thought about taking pictures.
Dr. Teddy insisted on checking my temperature readings.

After three very long business days with Saturday and Sunday stuck in the middle, I received the news that my test results were negative. I was utterly relieved, but I continued with the 14-day quarantine.

Even though this was a terrifying experience, I wasn’t going to share it because I was OK, and so many people affected by this malicious virus are not. I also did not want to stoke fear that might prevent people from seeking medical care from their doctors or avoiding hospitals. Recent events changed my mind, however, and I felt I needed to speak up.

The medical assistant clearly felt fine at the time and exhibited no symptoms. She was asymptomatic and unfortunately was within the six-foot safety bubble.  You never know when or where you might be exposed to COVID-19.

My advice, be prepared, and wear your mask. My mask protected me from COVID-19!

One relieved and grateful mom!
