I have become a Foodie. I am a bit surprised at that. Pre-COVID, I didn’t even know what the word meant. But, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a “foodie” is a person having an avid interest in food. I love food, and I sure love to cook. I’ve explored the food from other cultures and tried different combinations of seasonings and spices on this journey of discovery. My cooking has made each meal much more special for both my husband and I. But I haven’t made ice cream, that is, until now.
I have a KitchenAid mixer, and I recently purchased KitchenAid Mixer Ice Cream Maker Attachment. I found the recipe on the link below. There are many to choose from, but I decided on this simple recipe for vanilla ice cream.
VANILLA ICE CREAM
“This vanilla ice cream only calls for five easy ingredients; heavy cream, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and sea salt. So creamy and delicious!”

Ingredients:
- heavy whipping cream
- whole milk
- granulated sugar
- pure vanilla extract
- sea salt
Note: I had no whole milk, so I substituted Half and Half.
What did I learn from making ice cream for the first time? First, it wasn’t as hard as I feared it would be! It was fun, and my family loves ice cream. But what shocked me was the flavor! My “first time” ice cream was the best I have tasted. No kidding, the flavor was delicious! If I may say so, it was elegant!
My homemade ice cream had no artificial ingredients, excessive sugar, or preservatives to keep it fresh. I could pronounce every ingredient.
