National Chocolate with Almonds Day: A Sweet Reminder That Joy Matters Too

Today, July 8, is National Chocolate with Almonds Day.

I have to admit that when I first looked at today’s calendar of unusual holidays, I smiled. Lately, the news has felt especially heavy. It seems that every day brings another political disagreement, another natural disaster, another reminder that our world can be a difficult place. I wasn’t feeling particularly inspired to write this morning.

Then I discovered that today is dedicated to something as wonderfully simple as chocolate with almonds. Sometimes that’s exactly what we need.

Like many of our quirky food holidays, no one seems to know exactly who first created National Chocolate with Almonds Day. It simply appeared on calendars celebrating fun and unusual occasions, giving chocolate lovers another excuse to indulge. Frankly, I don’t think we need much encouragement.

The combination itself has a much longer history. Chocolate has been treasured for thousands of years, dating back to the ancient civilizations of Central and South America, where cacao was considered so valuable that it was even used as currency. Almonds have an equally impressive history, having been cultivated for thousands of years throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East. At some point, someone had the brilliant idea of bringing these two remarkable foods together. The result was magic.

There is something wonderfully satisfying about the smooth richness of chocolate meeting the crisp crunch of roasted almonds. Whether you prefer creamy milk chocolate, rich dark chocolate, or even white chocolate, almonds add just the right texture and flavor. It’s no wonder chocolate-covered almonds, chocolate-almond bars, turtles, almond bark, brownies with toasted almonds, chocolate-almond cookies, chocolate-almond ice cream, and even chocolate-almond milk have become favorites around the world.

The best part is that you can actually feel just a little less guilty while enjoying today’s celebration. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants that may support heart health when enjoyed in moderation. Almonds are packed with healthy fats, protein, fiber, vitamin E, and magnesium. Together they make a treat that is a little more nutritious than many desserts. Notice I said “a little.” Let’s not ruin the fun by framing it as health food.

Perhaps that’s really the lesson hidden inside this whimsical holiday. Life isn’t meant to be lived entirely in seriousness. We cannot solve every problem every day. We cannot carry the weight of the world every waking hour. Sometimes we need permission to smile, to laugh, to share a piece of chocolate with someone we love, or to enjoy a quiet moment without guilt.

Joy is not the opposite of caring. In fact, joy may be what gives us the strength to continue caring. So today, if you’re able, enjoy a piece of chocolate with almonds. Share one with a friend. Surprise a neighbor. Sneak one to your spouse. (Don’t tell your doctor I suggested it.)

Tomorrow, the world’s challenges will still be there, waiting for us to do our part. But today, perhaps we can pause long enough to appreciate one of life’s simple pleasures.

Happy National Chocolate with Almonds Day!
Sometimes the sweetest moments are exactly what our hearts need.
