Greetings, friends. It’s Dr. Teddy again, and this time, we’re tackling a slightly spookier subject. Not ghosts that rattle chains or hide in closets, those are just stories humans tell. I’m talking about a different kind of ghost. The ones that live quietly in your heart.
Mom says Halloween is a time for remembering. She lights candles, looks at old photographs, and sometimes sighs with that faraway sound that means she’s thinking of someone she misses. When she does, Bear and I sit close. We don’t say anything, but we feel it too, the soft ache of love that doesn’t go away.
“Are there really ghosts, Uncle Teddy?” Bear asked once.
“Oh yes,” I told him. “But not the kind that float or frighten. The real ones live in memories. They follow us not to haunt us, but to remind us that love never ends.”
Bear thought about that for a long time. He’s a deep thinker, especially when treats are not involved. Finally, he said, “So when Mom smiles at that picture on the shelf, she’s talking to a ghost?”
“Exactly,” I said. “And when Mom laughs at one of our old puppy pictures, she’s talking to the ghost of time, the happy kind.”
Every person carries ghosts like that. Some are people they miss. Some are moments they wish they could visit again. And some are the parts of themselves they’ve outgrown but still remember fondly.
So when the nights get longer and the wind whispers outside, don’t be afraid of the ghosts that visit. The good ones aren’t here to scare you. They’re here to remind you that what was once loved is still loved, always.
We all have ghosts we choose to keep. And sometimes, they’re the ones that help us feel most alive.
With love from both of us,
Dr. Teddy and Bear 👻💛
A Closing Thought From Mom
When I watch Teddy and Bear settle close beside me, as if they understand the quiet spaces that memory leaves behind, I am reminded that love never truly disappears. It changes form, softens, and becomes part of who we are. The ghosts we carry are not there to haunt us but to remind us that what we have loved still lives within us.
In the soft glow of a candle or the comfort of a familiar paw against my leg, I feel the presence of all that has shaped my heart. The past does not vanish; it becomes light, guiding us forward in ways we cannot always see. And perhaps that is the real gift: love, once given, never truly leaves. 💛
