What immediately catches your attention is her gorgeous tail. It almost looks like a feather duster standing proudly above her back. When a skunk feels threatened, it raises that tail as a warning. Unlike many wild animals that run away, skunks prefer to avoid conflict whenever possible. They usually give several warnings before ever spraying. They may stomp their front feet, turn their back toward the threat, raise that beautiful tail, or even hiss. They’re essentially saying, “Please don’t make me use my last line of defense.”
That famous spray is incredibly effective. It can reach distances of about 10 to 15 feet, and the odor can linger for days. Fortunately, skunks would much rather save it than waste it.
That makes my investigation all the more interesting.
I follow invisible scent trails that disappeared hours before I ever wake up. To me, the backyard is filled with stories written in smells instead of words. One sniff tells me if a raccoon passed by. Another reveals a gray fox. Then suddenly…there it is.
“Mom…Sweetpea, the skunk was here!”
