The Very Important Job of Being Comfortable by Bear

Hi friends,

I would like to tell you about something very important. Most people think a dog’s job is chasing balls, barking at suspicious squirrels, or protecting the family from dangerous delivery drivers. Those are all important jobs. I take them very seriously.

But there is another job that is even more important. The job is being comfortable.

I discovered this while Dad was watching television.

At first, I was lying on my own couch cushion. It was perfectly fine. Then I thought about it for a minute and realized that I would probably be more comfortable if I moved a little closer to Mom.

So I carefully climbed over and rested my head on her lap. Mom smiled and started petting me, which confirmed that I had made an excellent decision.
After a while, I became very sleepy. You know how sometimes you are trying to stay awake, but your eyes keep getting heavier and heavier? That happened to me.
The television was making noise. Dad was watching something other than DogTV. Mom was watching too.

Well… at least she was trying to.

I put my head down and decided that if Mom wanted to continue watching television, she would have to do it around me. That seemed reasonable.
Soon I was completely relaxed. One paw was stretched out. My ears were warm. My eyes were getting droopy. I could feel Mom’s hand resting on my back.

Everything felt safe.

Everything felt right.

Eventually, I settled in even deeper. I tucked one paw under my chin because that is the official position of professional napping experts. I wasn’t sleeping exactly. I was supervising. With my eyes mostly closed. Very mostly. Almost entirely. The important thing is that I was still on duty.

Then Mom took another picture while I was leaning against her.

By this point, I was so relaxed that I could barely keep my eyes open. I wasn’t worried about squirrels. I wasn’t worried about delivery trucks. I wasn’t even worried about where my next treat was coming from.

I was exactly where I wanted to be. Right next to my mom.
"I am not asleep. I am merely resting my eyes."
"The meaning of life is being near Mom."

Humans sometimes think they need big adventures to be happy. Maybe they need to travel somewhere special, buy something new, or accomplish something important.

Dogs know a secret.

Sometimes the very best moments happen when everybody is home, the television is on, the house is quiet, and you are resting beside the people you love.

That is when your heart feels full.

That is when you know you belong.

And if Dad misses part of his show because I am using Mom as a pillow, well, I think that is a sacrifice he should be willing to make.

Love,

Bear 🐾

From Mom:
Looking at these photos, I am reminded that some of life’s sweetest moments are also the quietest. No grand adventure happened here. No exciting event. Just a dog who wanted to be close to the people he loves.

Bear has a remarkable gift for reminding me that comfort, companionship, and unconditional love are often enough. In a world that constantly encourages us to do more, buy more, and hurry more, he gently reminds me to sit still for a moment and simply enjoy being together.

That may be one of the most important lessons a dog can teach. ❤️💕🐾
