I am always looking for new ways to provide healthy and nutritious snacks for Teddy and Bear.
Countless choices are available online and in cookbooks when you are looking for recipes for homemade treats. However, with so many options, figuring out where to start can take time. The key is to look for wholesome ingredients like oats, applesauce, pumpkin puree, and yogurt – all of which can provide essential nutrients without added additives or preservatives. Additionally, make sure that the recipe has clear instructions so you can make the treats successfully.
Making homemade dog treats can be a gratifying experience for you and your pup. Not only are you providing them with a healthy snack, but you’re also taking time out of your day to bond with them. In addition, preparing the ingredients together and baking the treats can create a special moment between the pet and the pet parent.
Avoid adding sugar or sweeteners like xylitol when creating recipes is essential because they can be toxic for dogs. Additionally, read labels carefully when picking out ingredients – try to avoid anything with unknown ingredients or additives, as those could also cause harm to your beloved pooch.
I’ve made vanilla ice cream multiple times for my doggie kids and wanted to try something different and unique. I found the following recipe, Fancy Strawberry Dog Sherbert, in one of my go-to recipe books, Doggy Desserts by Cheryl Gianfrancesco, page 104.
Fancy Strawberry Dog Sherbert
Ingredients:
- 10-ounce package of frozen strawberries, partially thawed
- 3/4 of a cup of water
- 1/2 a cup of milk
- 1/4 of a cup of honey
- 2 egg whites
Steps:
- Place strawberries, water, milk, and honey into a blender; cover and blend until smooth.
- In a medium bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Then continue beating at high speed until stiff peaks form. Finally, fold the egg white mixture into the strawberry mixture.
- Pour the mixture into a 9 x 9 x 2″ pan. Cover and freeze until firm.
- To serve, scrape a spoon across a frozen mixture and put the shavings in your dog’s bowl.
Yield: approximately 16 servings
