So, let’s begin our discussion with Dr. Teddy:

Dr. Teddy, What Are Shingles?

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which causes chickenpox. It is estimated that 1 in 3 people will develop shingles in their lifetime, with those over 50 at higher risk.

Shingles is a painful rash that develops on one side of the body or face. It usually appears as small blisters filled with fluid and lasts 2-4 weeks. The rash is accompanied by burning, tingling, or numbness in the affected area.

The varicella-zoster virus remains dormant in our nerve tissue after recovering from chickenpox. Our immune system weakens as we age, making it easier for the virus to reactivate and cause shingles.

Dr. Teddy, How Do You Catch Shingles?

You cannot catch shingles directly from someone who has it. However, suppose you have never had chickenpox or have not been vaccinated against it. In that case, you can catch chickenpox from someone with shingles.

Shingles are most commonly spread through direct contact with the fluid from the blisters of a person with shingles. It can also be transmitted through coughing or sneezing, although less common.

Dr. Teddy, What Are the Symptoms of Shingles?

The first sign of shingles is usually pain or tingling in a specific body area, such as the chest, back, or face. This is followed by a rash that can range from mild to severe and can be accompanied by fever, headache, and fatigue.

Early treatment is crucial to reduce the severity and duration of shingles. If you experience these symptoms, seeing a doctor as soon as possible is essential.

Dr. Teddy, What is the Duration of Shingles?

The duration of shingles varies from person to person. The rash will usually clear up within 2-4 weeks. However, some people may experience pain even after the rash has healed. This is known as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and can last for months or even years.

Thank you, Dr. Teddy. Do you have any final thoughts?

Shingles are a common and painful viral infection that can have long-lasting effects if not treated promptly. It is essential to be aware of the symptoms and seek medical attention if you suspect you may have shingles. Remember, prevention is always better than cure, so vaccinate against chickenpox or Shingles if you have had Chickenpox to reduce your risk of developing shingles. Take care of yourself, and stay healthy! So, if you ever experience any symptoms of shingles, don’t hesitate to seek medical help and follow proper treatment.
