Game Trails

I’ve been thinking about the animals that live around my house. Often I worry about their survival. As the human population grows in the area, I fear that they might be struggling to find food, water, and shelter. Then I also wonder why are they here? Of course, I would like to believe that the animals know that I love them, and just like in a Disney movie want to be around me. Alas, I think that my house was built right in the middle of a game trail, and for thirty years, wildlife has continued to use their same daily paths, only instinctively walking around the house.

What are game trails? Animal game trails differ from typical human hiking trails. Game trails are narrow, and unlike human hiking trails, do not disturb the surrounding forest. I found these quotes on Understanding Game Trails, September 9, 2015. “One of the first things to understand about game trails is that large herbivores make the most common and enduring ones.” My deer are large herbivores. “Game trails are often the most straightforward and easiest way to get somewhere.”

Well, one game trail goes straight through my backyard, and my daily visitors consist of deer, grey fox, bobcats, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, hawks, owls, bunnies, squirrels, black bear, and an occasional mountain lion.

Since I do nothing to deter their movement, I also worry that they might become too comfortable being around people. I particularly worry about the bears. I don’t want them to become habituated. Looking at the pictures of Rose, I can see she is comfortable walking through the backyard. She is extremely close to the house, which does concern me. Rose is a frequent visitor and you can see in the pictures below she watches the house as she walks by.

We had some reconstruction on both the front and back decks, which I thought might frighten off the animals, but that turned out to not be the case. They just came at different times to avoid the construction crews.

I am not sure that this bear was Rose, but I assume that it was. She was following the same game trail as the deer.

In spite of my concerns, I have re-positioned my field cameras several times, trying to capture the best images of these animals whether they are following game trails or visiting me. My field cameras are in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
