The home in Arnold provides opportunities for me to photograph and carefully observe animals that I would have never thought possible. The animals that I write about are my immediate neighbors, and I’ve come to recognize some individuals and appreciate their distinct personalities. I think that some of the deer and possibly the bear, Rose, are just as curious about their human neighbors. Maybe they want our attention? What am I dealing with here, and how do I best handle this opportunity?
In the video below you can clearly see a herd of deer move through my backyard on a well-traveled familiar path.
My primary focus has been on the large predators rather than the deer because I was blind to the deer’s potential. I now believe that the deer are far more intelligent than I ever imagined. My personal experiences and my photos indicate that the deer and the three bears (Pillow, Rose, and Ursa) are all demonstrating the same intelligent curiosity. I find this very exciting!
In the photos below you can see that the bears are traveling on the same game trail as the deer. They both follow the trail one direction and then return in the opposite.
It is a surprise that both the deer and the bear follow the same game trails. Why? I believe that they are both following age-old game trails that merge and split throughout the forest floor, but for what purpose? If you have any information on this subject please share in the comments below.
Perhaps each game trail has history and a story, and I hope to learn those stories!
