I am intrigued by the game trails around my house, and I’ve written a couple of blogs about them. Game trails are paths created when large herbivores travel in a consistent pattern, and their weight and their hooves create a trail in the soil. Game trails are also affected by the weather and the number of animals using the paths. That is a simplified/straightforward explanation, and I want a more in-depth understanding! I contacted the Arnold Library, hoping that they might have LiDAR maps or something similar that I could view. Unfortunately, I learned that there isn’t much-noted information about Arnold or the game trails. Before the discovery of gold, the history of Arnold revolves around the logging industry.
The librarian encouraged me to contact theĀ Sierra Nevada Logging Museum. On their website, I learned that the White Pines and Arnold communities grew and prospered because of the logging industry. But there was no information on the game trails or the deer.

I was disappointed, but the trails around my house are very familiar and well-traveled by the deer. My deer are the originators of the game trails, and they are the ones that will provide the correct information.
Since I don’t speak “Deer,” I am going to have to be more observant and watch their behaviors more carefully. I think I will either position additional field cameras directly on the game trails or reposition my current cameras. Once I figure that out, I will share it with you.
I also want to speak to the indigenous people of the area, the Sierra Miwok. The early Miwok people had an in-depth understanding of the forests. Deer were critical to their survival, and perhaps some stories have been passed down generation to generation about the deer and the game trails.
