My beautiful female bears have returned, and there is a new bear, which I have already name Pooh. I have been anxiously waiting for the first sighting of a bear, and at last, I can finally say they are back. I am so excited to share this experience with you!
I kept checking my field cameras and the game trails for bear tracks, but nothing, and then suddenly, the bears were everywhere.
I should add that even though the bears are back, I have yet to see their tracks around my house. I am looking for tracks that are flat-footed, large, and somewhat human in appearance track. The largest toe of a Black bear is on the outside of their foot, and their feet are rounder than human feet. Bears do have five toes on both their front and hind feet. The Black bear tracks should also show claws.

Field camera #5 used night-vision capabilities and the ability to take a succession of rapid photographs to achieve these beautiful up-close-and-personal photos of Rose. I was not able to see if a tiny cub was following her in these photos.
I am so excited about the video below. I’ve been anxiously waiting to see if this was the year that Rose would have her first baby, and would she return to her territory around my house? Well, yes to both.

Rose cautiously guides her baby down the driveway and across the street into an open forest.
The same morning 06/04/2020 – 07:14 AM, we were visited by a new bear. Because of this bear’s lighter color, it reminds me of Winnie the Pooh. Black bears vary in color (i.e., cinnamon, tan, brown, and black). Though considered to be medium-sized bears, Black bears have large bodies with small, narrow heads, powerful limbs, and little ears.

During the time that we have owned the property in Arnold, my understanding of Black bears has increased, but there is still so much to learn. I am primarily learning by observation, but there is a wealth of detailed information online. According to the California Department of Fish and Game, “Adult female Black bears weigh 100 – 200 pounds whereas adult males are larger, at 150 – 350 pounds, though some males have weighed over 600 pounds.”

Bears are massive! It is hard to judge their size from the photos. So for a better comparision I’ve posted the photos below. Teddy is a 70 lb Golden Retriever, and I am not petite, but we appear small compared to the bear.
It is a dream come true to be able to observe Black bears and not endanger them or my family in the process!
