I enjoy walking! I enjoy the health benefits, psychological benefits, and just being out in nature. Walking helps me reconnect with my inner self. I’ve always enjoyed walking with my dogs, and through the years, I’ve had several dogs to walk with, but when Candy and Brandy entered my life walking took on a new meaning. We walked lengthy distances every day, and they enriched my life! My two Golden girls were my therapists and best friends! I regularly talked to them as we walked along.
We met new friends on our walks. We regularly visited the Hidden Valley Park, where cows roamed the hillsides. I had no idea that cows were such social creatures, but they are and they were very curious about us.
Sadly one week before her 10th birthday, I lost Brandy to the canine cancer, Hemangiosarcoma. Now it was just Candy and me.
Without Brandy, it seemed that Candy just wasn’t up to walking the long distances anymore. She was lonely and grieving the loss of her sister. I thought about bringing in another dog to keep her company, but I wanted it to be special time just for Candy so I decided against it.
We tried walking with Scrappy. After all he is the Leader of our Pack, and Candy has always been happy to follow him. Unfortunately though our leader prefers naps over long walks.
It has been 3 years since Brandy’s passing, and early this year, I learned that my friend and golden retriever breeder, Laura Finco, Argus Golden Retrievers, was going to have a litter of puppies available. So I applied and ultimately adopted my little Teddy! I had high hopes that one day Teddy and I would be able to hit the road together as Candy and Brandy and I had done so many times before.
Teddy brought new energy to all of us. There was no sitting now! He had us running in different directions, and even Candy was moving around more. She didn’t want to miss any of the fun or extra treats.
We purchased a stroller for Candy, so even though she has difficulty walking now, she could go everywhere with us. Teddy is a young and energetic puppy, and the ideal walking man, so stay tuned for our walking adventures.
Teddy has a wise old soul look at times, and then other times he is entirely squirrely! My handsome Walking Man, Teddy, is now a young 9 months old, and yet he has had a profound impact on all of our lives! We love you Teddy!
