The Sturdy ZZ Plant

Not too long ago, I introduced you to Bernie the Fernie, and I thought you might enjoy meeting some of her friends. Bernie is a Maidenhair fern and requires daily attention, but she has sturdy friends who might even be called the cast-iron plants. Bernie’s friends are ZZ plants and live in my dining room. My dining room has three large east-facing windows that provide a lot of light to the room.

Bernie’s ZZ Plant friends, Zamioculcas Zamiifolia, are excellent houseplants for beginners. ZZ plants are easy to care for and can thrive in various conditions.

ZZ plants need very little water and only need to be fertilized once a month. The ZZ Plant stores moisture in the thick part of the petiole, a slender stem that supports the blade of a foliage leaf and its other parts. Therefore, a ZZ plant is a drought-resistant plant.

ZZ plants add a splash of deep green color and are also low maintenance. But here are some tips to keep your ZZ plant looking its best.

The most important thing to remember when caring for a ZZ plant is that it needs plenty of light. In general, the more light your plant gets, the quicker it will grow. So, if your plant is not growing as quickly as you would like, try moving it to a brighter spot.

They do well in low-light conditions, making them the perfect choice for people who don’t have a lot of sunlight in their homes. Western-facing and Eastern-facing windows are the best for your ZZ Plant. ZZ plants can also tolerate periods of neglect, so they’re a great option if you’re forgetful or busy.

Another thing to remember is that ZZ plants need relatively little water. It would be best if you only watered them when the soil is completely dry all the way through. This may mean watering every 2-3 weeks in a sunny, warm spot or every 4-6 weeks in a darker, cooler spot. Watch the soil, so you don’t water too often or too little!

In summary, here are a few things to keep in mind when caring for your ZZ plant:

  • The ZZ plant prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight, as it can cause the leaves to burn.

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance plant that is easy to care for and can thrive in various conditions, the ZZ Plant is a great choice! It can live for years with proper care and add some greenery to your home. Thanks for reading, and I hope this was helpful! ZZ out! (Pun intended). 🙂
